I would be very grateful for any assistance in finding a John Nicholson Bleacher/Finishing Bleacher/Finisher in 1851

Thank you.

Not John, unfortunately, but here's most of the rest of that family in 1851. The children are born in Sharples, Lancs.

Very odd that an informant other than the mother can name a father on a birth certificate.

Thank you argyllgran, Mike & EVEIE.

Yes Mike, the birth cert is very odd. I definitely didn't expect to see a father's name after receiving Guest's marriage cert. where no father was shown.

I think you may be right about John's death before 1851, argyllgran. I've cross referenced the death registrations you posted above with the deaths on LancashireBMD and the one in 1847 was aged 22yrs and registered in Sharples!!

I'll send for the death cert. now. Could you please post the address for the Nicholsons in the 1851 census you very kindly posted above.

Thank you all very much for your help with this. :-)

ArgyllGran

ArgyllGran Report 26 May 2013 22:44

The Nicholsons' address in 1851 is:
77 Hiles Fold, Sharples.

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 26 May 2013 23:03

could the William Guest on the birth certificate be the grandfather shown in 1851?

The image of that 1851 for Guest Guest shows address to be Horrocks Fold as on the the birth cert.

Mike * Report 27 May 2013 10:44

I assumed the informant was Ellen's father or brother,( though would it not have " informant grandfather/ uncle" ? ) which is why I find it odd that they were at liberty to divulge the father's name seeing as the child was not being registered in his surname.

I assume the birth cert has not been "doctored" after being issued?

I have found some before with hand written notes added .

Christina(Lancashire)

Christina(Lancashire) Report 27 May 2013 12:55

argyllgran, thank you for the Nicholsons' address in 1851.

LancashireAnn, thank you, William Guest on the birth cert must have been Guest's grandfather, Ellen's father. Though why it didn't state his relationship I've no idea.

Mike, thank you, I've also always assumed that Ellen's father registered his grandson's birth.

From info on my other thread querying the registration of Guest's birth,

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/genealogy_chat/thread/1281969

it seems that the rules were vague and open to individual interpretation by the Registrars pre 1850. I do wonder why it doesn't say he was the grandfather, but then again he didn't give the child a 'Christian' name, so maybe he was ashamed of the fact.

The birth cert appears to have been written all in the same hand, with no obvious alterations.

Christina(Lancashire) Report 27 May 2013 13:32

Ooh getting excited now!

I've just checked Ellen Guest's death in 1846 and she died at Hills Fold, Sharples!!

Informant was again William Guest, this time stated as occupier of Hills Fold.

I wonder if Horrocks Fold was in Hills Fold?

And could the Nicholsons' address in 1851 be Hills Fold rather than Hiles Fold?

Do you think this means I can claim the above John Nicholson as my great great grandfather?

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 27 May 2013 15:37

I would say it was almost definitely Hills Fold in 1851 - another version has it transcribed as such

I've received the death cert today and it is must be the right one as he died at Hills Fold, Sharples, but I can't read the cause of death.

Would someone be willing to have a look for me please if I pm the image?
