Does anyone have any information on an Emily Mary M. Durrie who married John Emmanuel Inskeep in Atcham, Salop In 1903? She was widowed and then married Edward Harry Gibbs in 1913. The second marriage certificate gives her age as 27 meaning her DOB is around 1886. Her father is listed as Walter Durrie (deceased) who was a barber. I can find no record of either Emily or her father Walter prior to 1903 marriage. The 1911 census gives her place of birth as London but again no signs there. Thanks Lynne

Thanks for the quick replies. Family legend says Emily was brought up by nuns in Cork in Ireland and was left to fend for herself at 16. I have looked on a few Irish records but with no success. However every other family story has turned out to be false so far. I am researching this family on behalf of my partner who has very few details of even his parents never mind any further back. I think this may be a long struggle.

The following may well be a possibility...the Surname "sounds" very like Deery and has various spellings..eg Dwry/Dury/Dearie/Darrie...
Births Dec 1882 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dury Emily Mary Islington 1b 285
There is also a Walter Deery b 1883 and a Walter Deery b 1858 (Islington) on the 1891 Census both in Lambeth...dont have access to check out details

Unfortunately Emily Mary Dury mentioned above is not correct one. Have already checked her out and found a marriage for her which does not fit at all.
Emily Mary M Durrie is possibly Emily Mary Margaret Durrie. Another public family tree has her listed as that but no proof. The only other information on that tree states her father was called William W. Durrie. There are no dates for Emily's birth or for her father. I have tried messaging owner of tree to find out there source but have had no reply.
I have copy of marriage certificate for Emily Mary Inskeep(widow) when she married Edward Harry Gibbs in 1913. That just lists her father as Walter Durrie(deceased) who was a barber.

Do you also have a copy of the marriage to Inskeep, to see if the details match the later marriage?

The Gibbs/Durrie births in 1914/17 have the same spelling of mmn.
The reason I asked if you knew what the M stood for is in case it could have been her original surname, and she took on the name Durrie. I wonder if she actually knew where she was born - stating London in 1911 is rather loose, so maybe she wasn't sure. Maybe the family tales could be true (to some extent) and she was in an orphanage not knowing her history - she married very young first time around, and has been suggested before she may have invented the father rather than leave it blank.
The tree on ancestry is rather woolly - no evidence to back anything up, and no history for Emily so I wouldn't set too much store against the name.
Do you know roughly when/where Emily & Edward died?

Emily died in Mar 1968 in Birmingham and Edward died Mar 1970 also in Birmingham. I have found their deaths easily enough.
I will be getting Emily's 1st marriage certificate next month to see if the information is any different. I am on limited budget so can only afford 1 certificate a month.
Emily just doesnt seem to appear anywhere before her marriage in 1903.

Hello
Emily Mary Margaret Durrie is my Great Grandmother, its interesting reading this thread as I have had exactly the same problems as you and come up with the same possibilities/theories as the others that have replied to your thread.
Perfectly willing to share what info I have, but I don't have anything more than you do, like certificates etc. Interestingly the house that is listed as the address on the wedding certificate to John Inskeep still exists in Shrewsbury as does the chapel they were married at, which is now part of a girls school.
I've asked my mother if she is aware of any family story about her Grandmother Emily being bought up by Nuns, I am waiting for a reply.
