Georgette,

Although you call your ancestor Francis, it appears he was known as Frank.
It's the name on the 1891 census return posted by Reggie and it's also the name on 1904 Marshall/Walsh marriage search ( Scotlands People)

I found no matching deaths for Francis Marshall in Scotland, but I did find that a record exists for Frank Marshall who fits the profile.

This man was born circa 1883 and died in Ayrshire 1964.
( I cannot guarantee that this is your ancestor, but it does fit his profile)

I could not find any Marshall/Cavins marriage in Scotland , nor could I locate a death for Elizabeth Marshall other name Cavins

Glasgowlass, thank you very much for this information and thank you for taking the time too look into it, its very appreciated :-)

I have been researching the england connection and speaking with family...
Frank and sarah lived in kent for a short time and francis Was born in kent in 1921... ( found birth on freebmd)
Whist she ran a boarding house and he Was an army recruitment officer
And they went back to scotland and Was told frank def died in scotland,
so thankyou for this information' i will make notes and keep as a good possibility
When they went back to scotland there is talk that they lived on a caravan ??
There is supposidly a gypsy connection which I've yet to come across,

Also thank you for looking into the marraiges
:-) xx

Georgette,
Susan Gibbon Marshall was born in Ayrshire in 1932.
( 28yrs after her parents married??)
I am assuming that you have her birth cert to confirm that Frank and Sarah were definitely her parents ?

Free BDM does show that 2 x children William and Francis Marshall were born in Thanet 1919 and 1921.
The mother's name was Walsh.

When I looked on Scotlands People the birth of Thomas Walsh Marshall born 1925 in Kilmarnock also matched
If Francis was was his brother, born in Kent 1921 it means the family were back in Ayrshire within 4 yrs of his birth
Perhaps the birth record for your grandmother will give a better insight and will provide their address

Also, I do expect that Sadie and Sarah is the SAME person,
Liliath is probably Lillias Marshall born 1909 and registered in Riccarton, Ayrshire

Mary Jane Cairns Marshall registered Kilmarnock 1905 , will be named for her maternal grandmother, and is most likely to be the ELDEST child
Edith Marshall registered 1909 Riccarton

The following info refers to Sarah Walsh prior to her marriage of 1904 with Frank Marshall.

The names of her siblings reflect those of her children, and I fully suspect that her mother was called Mary Jane Cairns/Kairns/Kearns

Thomas Walsh and Mary Jane Kairns married in Glasgow 19 Aug 1866.
Son Edward Walsh was born in Glasgow 3 days later on 22 Aug 1866

By completing the ancestry, you have a better chance of locating the descendants.

Thomas Walsh and Mary Jane Kairns married in Glasgow 1866, 3 days before the birth of Edward.
However, the 1891 census also says that the next child, Mary Walsh was born in Ireland which is confirmed by this:

Ireland, Births and Baptisms, 1620-1911 about Mary Walsh
Name: Mary Walsh
Gender: Female
Birth Date: 3 Jul 1868
Birth Place: Newbridge, Kild, Ireland
Baptism Place: Newbridge, Kildare, Ireland
Father's Name: Thomas Walsh
Mother's Name: Mary Jane Kearns
FHL Film Number: 101171

All other children seem to be born in Ayrshire

glasgowlass
id like to start by thanking you dearly for all the info above, in the research you have done for myself is really appreicated, as i know to get this info you have used credits, and im very gratfull of your time and money spent,

most of my info has been passed to me from a cousin, his info is threw reasearch and info hes been given from his mum I.E , frank died in scotland as she visited him in hospital just before hand, his grandfather is francis b. 1921,
we have never met and have connected over the internet, during my search :)
and have been told same info from our parents that I.E sadie/sarah is the same person
i appologise i didnt put this info above, but thought if i just put the names, maybe another marshall link would pick up on them
i have seen documentation, tho its not a family tree document, but it states my nan had 19 siblings
whitch my cousin has also been told , 2 half siblings, william poss a twin the other died.....
ive also been told by my cousin and also off my mum, one of the siblings is actally a child to another sibling ( we think liliath )
i do not have my nanas birth cert, and will be intresting to make sure she isnt that sibling
as i took majority of info to be correct i have mainly been trying to get further back, but now i see i am going to concentrate on validating all the info i have been given
ive recently asked cousin for copys of certs and as soon as hes free hes going to email me them :)

i have some info about the marraige of frank ( i prosomed this short for francis tho have done name searches in the past for both name and have note book full of possibiltys to do with the family
really intresting to see that sarahs has irish roots,
that will be intresting to look at in the future

all i have on elizabeth cavins is that she was born at hurlford ayrshire, and married frank in 1944?? no certs of confermation
so may not be married, and the two extra children poss not franks,
then you say no death, so some info isnt matching here that ill try and find out

thank you so much again
if i purchase birth certs on line, will i have to wait till they arrive or can i download on to pc, and view all details
as eager to see what parents names are on nans cert xx

:-D :-D

Births within the last 100 years, marriages 75 years and deaths 50 years cannot be viewed online from Scotlandspeople. You need to order the certificate or visit the Scotlandspeople Centre in Edinburgh (cost £15.00 per day) to view the entries from which you can make notes. Registration entries from earlier years can be viewed online and downloaded to your computer.

I notice that earlier on this thread that you express a desire to delete this thread at some point. That would really be pointless as it may help someone else with their research. You can easily add to this thread any further queries about this family or indeed update it with new information as you gather and confirm the facts as and when you are able to do so.

georgettetaylor

georgettetaylor Report 24 May 2013 11:43

thank you rootsgather
the reason was going to delete thread as was told some children were born in england, and it threw me a bit
i had a thought,..... maybe francis and elizabeth moved and had children and poss died in england
and thought maybe i should confirm info as i had stated all children were born in kilmarnock, and if the case that what i was thinking was right, i would start a fresh post and correct my info, i thought id add that on the end rather than delete in the future and start a new thread in the future and confuse others that have helped and adived, to let them no what i was doing

but on reasech and help from glasgows lass and speaking with fam, they didnt stay in kent but moved back to ayrshire, and i now will not delete the thread but just add
thanks for advice,
im an amuture and every bit of advice is really appricated
i find i go round the houses to get to ware im going and appologise if i start to sound confusing lol xxx

Hi Rootsgatherer, Scotland's People is pay-per-view. You simply buy credits. I've been able to view very recent births, marriages and deaths from that site and have solved a family mystery by so doing. :-)

It costs about £12 to order a particular certificate to get fuller details.

georgettetaylor

georgettetaylor Report 24 May 2013 12:14

im thinking of asking my aunt, who lives in the area to go to the regestry office and purchase and post nans birth cert, think its only £10
if she goes to the correct regestry office will this be possible? she wouldnt have to go to Edinburgh would she, im guessing not
xx

rootgatherer

rootgatherer Report 24 May 2013 12:51

Cynthia. My apologies, that must be a very recent change to the SP website unless of course you refer to being able to look at the indexes for more recent events. As far as I was aware to view / download register entries they should meet the criteria as I have stated. I have been using the Scotlandspeople website since it's inception and have also visited the centre several times a year. Prior to the opening of the Scotlandspeople Centre I used New Register House on a very regular basis for over 20 years.

George,

I believe you can also use the Mitchell Library in Glasgow to view more recent entries. I am not sure how much that costs but it is probably only a little more than the cost of one certificate. If your Aunt could do that she would be able to look for ALL the recent entries that you need.

I think that there may also be a centre in Ayrshire that offers the same facilities.

EDIT

Here's some detail of the Ayrshire Centre

Hi Rootsgatherer yes, it's the indexes but I must admit that I found them very helpful. I was looking for a marriage in 1986 and a death in 1987. It was especially useful seeing the 'other' surname on the death cert - it clinched it for me :-D Cx

GlasgowLass

GlasgowLass Report 24 May 2013 17:36

Hi Georgette,Firstly, I didn't use any credits for the information.
I have census access and used SP search facility only to find the births.

The info that I posted refers to the parents and siblings of Sarah Walsh and is only relevant if she is the mother of your grandmother, which is why you need her birth cert as confirmation.

Once you have this, finding additional info should be fairly straighforward, but I don't want to overload you with irrelevant info at this stage, incase Frank and Sarah are not her parents.

Irrespective, I am certain that your family will be descended from an older couple found in Ayrshire from 1850 onwards.
This couple were called Francis and Euphemia Marshall.
They had a number of sons and it looks fairly obvious that one son was called William , married Jeanie Samson who were the parent's of Francis ( who married Sarah Walsh).
It is entirely possible that your family is actually descended from one of Francis and Euphemia's other sons which is why you need your grandmother's birth cert.

Edit:
RE Sarah's age at time of her 1940 death.
She was aged 5 @ 1891 and 16 @ 1901.
Therefore she would be about 18 or 19yrs old at time of her 1904 marrige.
She died in 1940 which means she was around 54 yrs old at death.
Although it's not impossible , if she was Susan Gibbon Marshall's mother, she was about 46yrs old and married for 28yrs when she gave birth.
