Blimey, just shows you how "family" stories can be distorted, I was told that Lanleegorse was a tanker full of oil, only to now find out that it was freighter full of maize!

I have a copy of that photo of William, who looks spookily like my first cousin David Jamieson.

Thanks for everyones help.

From http://www.shipsnostalgia.com/showthread.php?t=20356

The Medomsley Steam Shipping Company had a ship built by Palmers in 1927 called the Hedgehope of 4524 gross tons.
This ship was renamed Langleegorse, same company, in 1929.

She was bombed and sunk off the west coast of Ireland on the 23 January 1941 on a voyoge from Durban to London with a cargo of maize with the loss of 37 lives.

That record is my Great Uncle William Hughson Jamieson, his ship was I'm told a fuel tanker and it was sunk by a Luftwaffe Focke Wulf Condor off the southern coast of Ireland.

Never knew his name was on a memorial, so thanks for that.

Thanks that sort of nails it apart from the year of birth for my Granddad. Maybe he was ayear younger thatn my Mum remembers. He was a bit fluffy with the truth my old Granddad, he ran away fron school and joined the Merchant Navy claiming to be older than he was and then at the other end of his life he lied about being younger than he was so that they wouldn't retire him!

Scottish certificates give more information than English ones.

Your grandfather's birth certificate (which you can view / download from Scotlandspeople) will give the date and place of his parents marriage.

Scottish marriage certificates will give the names of both parents including mothers maiden surname.

Death certificates will give the names of both parents including mothers maiden surname if the informant knows the details.

A lot of that info will have originated from me, beacuse at the time I believed it to be correct, A recent coversation with my now admittedly frail mother, who's memory is a bit flaky has cast doubt on the exact nature of the info.

Thanks anyway

for Scottish records you need www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

It is a pay per view site but you will be able to download your Grandfather's birth certificate. Scottish birth certificates hold far more information than the English ones

30 credits cost £7
