Could someone do a look-up for me please?

Searching for the above for a CHARLIE JONES who is thought to have died at Mametz Wood in 1916.

Tried just about everywhere else....... :-( Had a couple of leads, but none of the associated records had info beyond a date.

Mni tks,

Mr D.

Mametz Wood was the objective of the 38th (Welsh) Division during the First Battle of the Somme. The attack occurred in a northerly direction over a ridge, focussing on the German positions in the wood, between 7 July and 12 July 1916

MrDaff Report 26 Mar 2013 19:31

LB - Born Cardiff JFM 1893

Jonesy - been trawling that, but not having much luck......

Margee - Will give that a go, but Ox & Bucks a bit out of area for S.Wales (Of Course the AV is for real ;-) ;-) :-D)

GB - looked at RWF and got a possible hit, but they recruited from N.Wales not South, and 1916 poss bit before the 'take anyone' attitude arrived.

There was a Charlie Jones d1916 mentioned on GR, but can't get into it.

Driving me mad !!! LOL !!!

MrDaff Report 26 Mar 2013 19:46

:-D Tks all......but if you know different ......!!!

GlitterBaby

So what name was his birth registered in as no Charlie Jones listed in Cardiff JFM 1893

MrDaff

MrDaff Report 26 Mar 2013 21:56

Oh.....tish !!

Charlie :

1901 Census b. abt 1898 living at 25 Canal St, Cardiff (family home) RG13/4979. That's all I've got really. No 1911 info so far.

Other than the fact that there is a photo of him in uniform (WW1), but without headgear, so no clue there on badge etc, v. little known. No marriage/children known of, just that he died in the early part of the war 'in a wood' in France'.

Beginning to think death may have been later - no-one in the family is sure, though as the war dragged on, there weren't that many woods still standing :-(

Morning!

GB - yes, tried those on Ancestry, but they don't fit :-(

CH - That's v interesting, and fits with family (parents (Samuel/Selina) and siblings either side). They were keen on baptism/christenings, and have elder sister Ruth baptised 17 Jun 95, and younger sister Selina 22 Jun 99, but couldn't find Charlie.

The military records look great as well - family lived in Havelock St at this time :-D
So it seems he died not in action, but from an illness contracted whilst serving.
More digging to do :-D :-D

Many, many tks!

Don't suppose you want to look for 2 of his brothers??? Both a bit of a mystery - and seemingly elusive LOL !!! One 'went to sea' ..... the other received 'a medal from the King' (family tales only) - still digging around for them!
