Elliot Report 9 Mar 2013 12:16

Simply cannot find who Im looking for here, I have a marriage certifate and this is what I know from that:

His name is Frederick Rogers, he was 29yrs old when he married in 1922 and he was a Stoker (Gas Works).
His fathers name was also Frederick Rogers and he was a Scaffolder.
He married my great grandmother Matilda May Leeds at Paddington Registry office in 1922 and at the time they both lived in Warrington Crescent, Maida Vale/Paddington.

I should say, my grandfather (Son of Matilda May Leeds) was born 2 years prior to this marriage and there is no father listed on his birth certificate. At that time, on the birth certificate, Matilda and her son (My grandfather) were resident in Milton Union Workhouse in Kent, then two years later Matilda marries Frederick Rogers and my grandfather was subsiquently given away. Matilda and Frederick then had two more children who were also given away.

I am trying to find out who Frederick was and where he came from etc. but Im a bit lost :-/

Can anyone help at all? Im not sure what to do next really!?

Thanks,
Elliot

Where have you looked? You can search 1911 census by occupation (for the father)

Who witnessed the marriage?

I think the person Elliot is looking for is Frederick Rogers. It is the son of Frederick's wife who would have been born with the surname Leeds.

1901 census shows three Fredericks with no second name whose fathers are also Frederick

None of the fathers is a scaffolder.

One has one leg
Another works on a farm
The third is a Miner

You've mis-read the request, Shirley

KathleenBell

KathleenBell Report 9 Mar 2013 12:42

It is Alan's step-father, Frederick Rogers, who Elliot is looking for details of.

The witnesses on the marriage certificate may give a clue.

Although this doesn't help with details for Frederick, I think this is Matilda on the 1911 census living with her married sister and family:-

maybe Frederick was the informant on Matilda s death cert or she was widow which may help finding Freds death if he predeceased her

Only thing I can suggest is to get Matilda's death cert of 1955 to see if it helps

Elliot

Elliot Report 9 Mar 2013 13:28

Yes Shirley, thats Matilda in 1901 and I have found her on the 1911 too, its not the one kindly cited by Kath and I'll try not to complicate the issue any more but by 1911, both Matildas natural parents had died and she was living with her step-parents and had taken their name (Parks), she had a little brother and it was because of him that I found her on the 1911 as although her name had changed to Parks, he still had their original name of Leeds:

Anyway, I have all the details about Matilda, but it is Frederick Rogers that I am searching for.

The Alan Leeds you posted about Shirley, that is indeed Matildas son and my grandfather.

He was born in a workhouse in Kent & then suddenly, 2yrs later Matilda is in London, getting married to Frederick Rogers.

It is this Frederick Rogers that Im looking for :-)

While I think of it, Reggie mentioned that you can search the 1911 by occupation, can you do that on this website? If so, could you tell me how please? (Im probably being really dim, sorry) lol

Elliot did you see I posted Matilda's death of 1955 ?

Would suggest you get the cert as it will say wife or widow of then you will know if Fred was still alive then.

They may of course have separated if children were put into care.

KathleenBell Report 9 Mar 2013 14:32

I'm not sure if you can search the 1911 census by occupation on Genes but you can on Findmypast. There is no Frederick Rogers in the 1911 census with the occupation of stoker or scaffolder but their occupations could have changed several times between 1911 and the 1922 marriage.
