Hi Sally
I've already added a reply to this tread but don't think it came out. Apologies if it did and I'm repeating myself. My granddad was Frederick George Bartlett who was born in 1911 to Charles Bartlett and Charlotte Briffitt and so is the brother to your granddad (which makes us (albeit distant) cousins). I never met John but do remember my granddad mentioning him. Fred died in 1987 and so I can't ask him anything about him. Fred also was a furrier. I've also only met one or two of the Bartlett's myself and that was when I was very young but if I can help you with any questions you may have then please ask as you never know I may be able to help.

That's a difficult one. There are several deaths which could be his in various parts of the country. To confirm a match we would need his full birth date from his birth certificate providing the person who informed of his death knew this and that he died late enough for his birth date to be given on his death registration.
He may have left the country and died abroad. or he may even still be living or if he died after 2005 his death will not be onlline.
Just too many probables!

If Henry was my John. Would he have to put Henry on his marriage certif to Gran in 1940???

Chris Ho :)

Chris Ho :) Report 12 Dec 2012 17:16

Would also consider the 1911 posted by Astra, earlier...the Alice E born 1913 would be sister to John, born 1916...

Sally Report 12 Dec 2012 16:57

I have asked myself, many times, the same question!!! AN simply I dont 'know' . Have tried to work backwards from marriage certificate.

John and Bessie's marriage certificate is my only solid real lead and that puts them both at 23yrs old in 1940. Bessie born in April 1917.

My thinking on Charles was the printing industry and the tradition of families working in the same industry. And the time it would take to work his way up from the bottom, a Cropper Hand, to becoming a fully fledged Printer and Compositor.

Misguided Newby!!!! :-(

How do you know he was born 1917 Southwark, as you have in your Tree?...

Chris :)

(have you checked 'Search All Trees', top right of page, under 'Search', he seems to be shared)

Thanks Chris Ho:)

I came across the John you have there . Marriage certif puts them both at 23 yrs old when they married in Aug 1940.

On the 1911 census there is a household of Henry Arthur Bartlett who among his children has an Alice and Charles But most interesting is the occupation of the children. eldest is a bookbinder, the girls and envelop folders and Charles is a Cropper hand. All to do with printing! And all in the Southwark area.

This also puts Charles at 15yrs and born in 1896.

But without John's info to confirm how do you tell who it really is????

(looks like a mistake on mothers maiden name, others are Briffitt!)

Astra

Astra Report 12 Dec 2012 16:10

That's the same family Chris
Alice E was born 1913 and Harold J 1918. I wonder if he shortened his name?
Ah no. I see now the maiden name on John's birth was mistranscribed
