can anyone help me
i'm trying to find out information to a gladys amelia cotterill born 1897. i know she married a albert stanley and i believe they had a child according to relatives who could have been disabled, but i can find no trace of a child. i also know she later married a francis laidler and had much to do with the threatre but have no further knowledge .

In 1919 Annie Laidler died. Francis Laidler was 42 years old and a widower. That same year while searching out new talent for his pantomimes he saw the 23-year-old Gladys Cotterill in a pierrot show. Although she had only been in the theatre for a few weeks professionally, the recently divorced Gladys Stanley was engaged by Laidler to play second boy in “Aladdin” at his Leeds Theatre Royal. Gladys was later to remark “Little did I think when I was saying my first few lines on the stage of the Theatre Royal, that I would one day own that theatre….”

If he was her son, she obviously didn't keep him with her

I GOT HER MIDDLE NAME FROM THE 1911 CENS, WHICH I BELIEVE TO BE CORRECT AS IT MENTIONS HER BROTHERS WHICH HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED FROM MY RELATIVES. THE W IN GWLADYS I BELIEVE WAS ADDED AT A LATER DATE AS IT BECAME HER STAGE NAME. HER PARENTS I HAVE AS FLORENCE AND WILLIAM. MY RELATIVES DO REMEMBER A BABY BEING BORN, AND THOUGHT THE GWLADYS MOTHER CARED FOR THE BABY AS GWLADY STRUGGLED WITH IT'S CONDITION AS THEY SPEAK ABOUT IT.

The 1911 census of the Gladys born in Birmingham but living within the Cannock Registration District indicates that her father's name was John, not William. It does not show a second name for Gladys.

From the information found and posted above it looks almost certain that the Gladys Cotterill that Francis Laidler married in 1926 was Gladys Florence Cotterill not Gladys Amelia Cotterill.

Which Gladys are you connected to and how?

You mention the names of Gladys's brothers as being confirmed to you by your relatives. Both Gladys's seem to have had 2 brothers (According to the 1911 census) have you followed those brothers forward in time to see if there is anything to confirm what your relatives have told you?

EDIT: I see from what Chris has just found that Gladys Florence Laidler nee Cotterill's friend was a Walter Cotterill (Her brother?, see 1911 census) on her 1938 trip to New York. This is further evidence that it was Gladys Florence Cotterill rather than Gladys Amelia Cotterill.
