I am trying to find the date of the death of my grandfather Richard Hockings.
He was born in Lympstone, Devon, moved to London, married Florence Theodora House and had lots of children! He was born in 1865 and probably died between 1935 and 1945 but I cant find the information. Any help gratefully received..

Looks like Grove Park Cemetry
Grove Park is an unusual municipal cemetery laid out in 1934 showing Moderne and Art Deco influences. The cemetery retains most of its buildings and structures, together with much of its structural planting. Features include an Art Deco-style stone drinking fountain, several rond points, a war memorial, and both formal and informal garden areas

Could ask them to do a search for Florence and ask for other people in the plot.Fee of course

Better still

Thank you all. Florence died in about 1960, I remember because I was about 13 at the time. My father told me that his father had died before I was born (1948), I think it might have been during the war. He was born in Lympstone Devon, and was an apprentice to Florences father.

I will try the cemetry.

You could phone GRO and explain that you feel it is misspelt and give date 1948 .they will search 2 years before and after that date .Could say he lived in the Deptford area ,and must have a wife named as you stated .

Have checked dates and my parents marriage certificate, they married in 1947 and Richard was noted as deceased then. So above cannot be him.

I will keep searching

I am still trying to find death of my grandfather. He was still alive in 1942 as we have found a picture of him at his daughter's wedding. He looks very frail tho. I have tried various different spellings of Hockings, but still no luck.

Any other suggestions?

Which quarters were the marriages in 1942 and 1947 please?

Flip

Flip Report 18 Mar 2013 19:31

There are 2 trees on Ancestry with this family, but neither are showing a 1942 marriage although both have your parents marriage in April 1947. Which marriage is in 1942, and when was it, as the nearest marriage on those trees is 1940? I realise one of these trees may be yours.

Also, have you followed the children to see if there is a possible death outside the Deptford area - he may have been visiting one of them.

Thank you for your replies. Richard was born in Lympstone Devon in March 1965. They lived in Lewisham for many years. Florence died in 1961 in Lewisham, registration district Deptford.
The marriage is of my Aunt Daisy, who married John Eliott in 1942, tho I am not sure which quarter. The 1947 marriage was my parents who married in April of that year.
Daisy's daughter does not know the date of his death. I only have one other cousin on that side of the family who might know, and Daisy's daughter is going to speak to her sometime soon, but she is in her late 80s. All of Richard's children are now dead.
