Thanks both - I'll note the information but will remember that it's not proven - yet! - that this is the right Henry. Seems quite likely though.

cheers, Linda

Rather belatedly thought you might like to know that I sent for Sarah Ann Penfold's birth certificate, and very interestingly no father is listed, and mother is Eleanor Blunden of 17 Queen Street, Brighton. So your deductions were all spot on! I also got Eleanor's marriage certificate to James Blunden, and this doesn't give a name for her father. She and James were both living at The Bear, Preston (Brighton) at the time of their marriage. Witnesses were George and Sarah Jones, so not even family members as far as I can see. I think Eleanor must have been an interesting young lady!!!

Sarah Ann's marriage certificate confirms her father as John Pernfold, Bootmaker. :-)

Haven't followed up the Bartletts yet btw - busy with other branches of the family!

Seems a bit irrelevant now, but...
Using the local index http://extranet3.kent.gov.uk/sp/rois/home.html

Name: PENFOLD , John , ,
Year of Marriage: 1846
Entry Number: 112
Register: C55X1
Location: Kent County Council

Name: BROAD , Eleanor , ,
Year of Marriage: 1846
Entry Number: 112
Register: C55X1
Location: Kent County Council

Note the same register & entry # confirms Sylvia's pairing - pity they don't say what church is coded by C55X

Could be a useful site - thanks for that. But as you say, we need a key to the codes!

Only recently returned to this family, and found a burial for Henry Bartlett 84 of Richmond Square on 28 January 1851 at Hanover Chapel General Burial Ground (Independent), Brighton. Still can't locate a baptism for his daughter Mary though. Perhaps she had a Non-Conformist baptism and it's not online yet.
