What a coincidence Jude! That was sheer chance what Choccy posted on your other unrelated thread.

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 17 Aug 2014 08:48

Just out of interest....on another thread Choccy posted a Western Mail extract from March 1918

And whilst reading it I came across the following....

THE SEAMAN'S WIDOW

In the workmen's compensation case at Newport of Mrs Elizabeth Ann Gale, widow, against the owners of the steamship "Azul", which had been lost at sea, the defence was that there was no dependency. Applicant denied, in answer to Mr Moxon, who appeared for the owners, that she left her husband, lived in turn with two other men and had illegitimate children. She understood her husband had gone to live with another woman and had "married" her, but she (applicant) promised not to take proceedings as long as he gave her money. His Honour Judge Hill Kelly decided that dependency had not been established and made an award in favour of the respondents - the owners of the vessel.

Oh what a lot of time this would have saved us all lol :-)

Just a quick "thank you"....what started out as an innocent question has been found to be a right can of worms! I cannot believe the amount of bigamists I have uncovered in my family!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Myra Coleman seems to have been Maria West who married Edward Coleman....and when she married William Henry in 1900 Edward was alive and kicking in Northants.......

Fortunately none of them are my direct line - phew!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you all once again :-)

According to the Memorial Register the address for Elizabeth Ann Gale nee Francis was Bishopsgate Parade, Cardiff Road, Newport. Certainly can't see her in Bishopsgate in 1911.

Unless of course the William I find in 1891 and 1911 with Myra is not him.....but he fits...and if it's not him then where is the William that married Elizabeth Ann. I guess he could be at sea all the time...but where is she?

Jude

HeyJudeB4Beatles

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 26 Jan 2014 11:53

and in 1871 James Gale was a ship's carpenter...so it HAS to be my William Henry :-S

And 1881 census the family including William were living at 29 CANNON Street

HeyJudeB4Beatles

HeyJudeB4Beatles Report 26 Jan 2014 11:50

MC....James and Rebecca were William's parents. They died in 1910 and 1897 respectively.

In 1881, William Henry is Single.

In 1891 he is living with Myra and states married though I cannot find a marriage until 1900. In 1901 he is at sea and in 1911 he is with Myra in Dean Street Newport.

So I found this death at sea as a result of UBoat action. The citation says son of late Mr and Mrs James Gale which fits with it being my William Henry.

But then it says husband of (suggests she is still alive) Elizabeth Ann Gale (nee Francis) - which is obviously that 1881 marriage. But he has been with Myra since 1891 (at least) and married to her since 1900. So was he a bigamist?
