I'm looking for more information with regard to Thomas Dudley, b. 1787, Edinburgh Castle, d. 1857 June 26. He married Mary Ellis on February 8, 1811 then married Mary Beaven, June 9, 1822. I haven't been able to go beyond Thomas Dudley, so if anyone could help, it would be appreciated.
Thanks! Wendy

If you could help us out a bit here -- is Edinburgh Castle in Edinburgh, Scotland?

Ah, I see -- another pig's ear made by Ancestry:

1851

Name: Thomas Dudley
Age: 64
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1787
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Mary Dudley
Gender: M (Male)
Where born: Castle, Cambridgeshire, England -- it says Edinburgh Castle

Civil parish: Newington
County/Island: Surrey

Thomas Dudley 64
Mary Dudley 61
Jane Gates 7 - granddaughter

Since you know the names and dates of his marriages, have you seen the parish records? If they were in Scotland (full information does really help), the parents' info should be there.

Mary was born in Gillingham, Kent, per the 1851 census.

Was Thomas possibly in the military?

What info did his birth record have?

ellieathome Report 10 Jun 2011 23:44

Yes Edinburgh castle is in Edinburgh.I can only think he was a military man. Both marriages in England. No birth coming up in Scotlandspeople i'm afraid.

Erinn

Erinn Report 10 Jun 2011 23:46

Possibly in the military. Newington sounds right. So, it might not be Edinburgh Castle then?

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 10 Jun 2011 23:46

And the questions -- it's really nice if you answer them.

If you have the marriage records, do they have no info about his parents?

Where did he marry the first time? the second time in Kent?

Ellen asks about his birth record but I'm assuming that's what you don't have. ;-)

Just saw your last post.

Can you say where the information you have given is coming from?

I'm confused, as it seems you didn't have the census info ...

The 1851 census clearly says Edinburgh Castle for his place of birth. But where did you get that info from?

Erinn

Erinn Report 10 Jun 2011 23:48

I have no record about his parents and haven't been able to go beyond his birth record. Thanks for your help!

Okay, if you don't want to answer the questions, good luck!

Erinn

Erinn Report 10 Jun 2011 23:50

I have looked at the Scottish Peoples' website and their military records, but with no luck! I've only seen the census records, not his birth records.

Is this coming from trees on Ancestry?

I don't understand why you won't/can't tell us *where* the information you are giving came from.

This one

http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/5344680/person/710620378?ssrc=

has him marrying:

Name: Thomas Dudley
Spouse Name: Mary Bradley
Record Type: Marriage
Marriage Date: 06 Jul 1812
Parish: All Saints, Edmonton
County: Middlesex
Borough: Enfield

and then

Name: Thomas Dudley
Spouse Name: Mary Beavan
Record Type: Marriage
Marriage Date: 09 Jun 1822
Parish: St George the Martyr
County: Surrey
Borough: Southwark

Does the person whose tree this is actually have some proof that those marriages are *this* Thomas Dudley??

They have Mary Beaven as mother of William 1813 and Caroline 1828.

Odd, when he married Mary Bradley in 1812 -- or in your version, Mary Ellis in 1811.

this one

http://trees.ancestry.co.uk/tree/10068219/person/26439940?ssrc=

has only the marriage to Mary Beaven 1822 Southwark, but also shows her as mother of those two children.

I'm afraid that I don't even bother looking at trees on Ancestry. I would say a majority of them are patched together out of total nonsense, "hints" given by Ancestry to boost its customer base by fooling them into thinking they have got what they paid for.

If you do want to tell us sometime what your sources are, feel free!

The information is pieced together from a variety of sources, including parish records. I do know that the Thomas Dudley I'm interested in is the second one from your post, because I can trace a direct lineage to my grandmother from him. What I can't seem to do is go beyond this Thomas Dudley to his parents, although I will try the Kent ancestory registry, as I've scrolled through those from Surrey already. Thank your for your responses (time zones do make a difference!)

bump!

JaneyCanuck

JaneyCanuck Report 11 Jun 2011 18:59

Erinn, you completely refuse to give the sources of the info you have and to say how you know it relates to this person.

The trees on Ancestry are not about two people, they are about one person. They have different information about him, and you have a third set of different information, because, obviously, at least some of this "information" is nonsense.

How do you know this:

"He married Mary Ellis on February 8, 1811 then married Mary Beaven, June 9, 1822."

? You have parish records with marriages in the name of Thomas Dudley? Was there only one Thomas Dudley in the UK at the time?

The only *known facts* seem to be in the census I posted:

1851

Name: Thomas Dudley
Age: 64
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1787
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Mary Dudley
Gender: M (Male)
Where born: Castle, Cambridgeshire, England -- it says Edinburgh Castle

Civil parish: Newington
County/Island: Surrey

Thomas Dudley 64
Mary Dudley 61
Jane Gates 7 - granddaughter

Your reply was that Newington "sounds right".

Well if you're saying that your Thomas Dudley was born in Edinburgh Castle, that seems to be the only place you could have got that info from -- so surely you have that census.

If you trace your ancestry back to this Thomas Dudley, try telling us how.

What child of his, where and when born, what mother ... ?

I don't think that bumping the thread is going to persuade anyone to pursue what appears to be a wild goose chase.

Unless you give the actual *facts* you have, with the source of those facts, and show how you have established that they relate to *your* Thomas Dudley, it's dead end.

JaneyCanuck Report 11 Jun 2011 19:10

Name: Caroline Dudley ?
Age: 13
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1828
Where born: Surrey, England

Civil parish: St George The Martyr
County/Island: Surrey
Registration district: St George Southwark

Thomas Dudley 50
Mary Dudley 50
Caroline Dudley 13

His occupation is Carpenter, so this is the same people as in 1851.

His place of birth is given as "N" -- not born in county. If he had been born in Scotland, it should say "S" in the next column.

Thank you for your charming PM, Erinn.

My reply is: please don't post on the board if you plan only to waste people's time by refusing to give information.

In case you didn't happen to read the instructions at the top of the board:

"Give as much detail as possible when explaining who you are trying to find. All known information will make it much easier for volunteer helpers to help you."
