I was born at 2A Broken Cross Place Adjoined to the Broken Cross pub. I remember the canalside shop with its woodyard at the back run by by the Astles family, Amy and Jeff Bosleys farm at the end of the lane, Bradburys farm across the canal and Fletchers smithy across the road from the pub.

My relations lived in Bradford farm and 1 canal cottage, Bosley's at the farm and must have been Burgess's and 1 canal cottage
I spent may days during the late 50's and 60's there helping out on the farm and in the shop at canal cottage, I remember the coal yard and watching the horse drawn barges from the canal shop

Fantastic! Thank you to all of you. That's brilliant detective work. It's interesting to note but I've got schofield in my family tree. Be great if they are connected to mine but prob not.

Thank you again. Sorry for delay. I didn't think I'd get anymore replies.

Aha. Looking at google maps I could see that the *street* split into a Y. Perhaps it is the part of the street alongside the canal that is the "canal side" of Broken Cross Place.

In 1881, using "broken" as the address in Rudheath, there are 86 results, i.e. 15-20 households. They'd be quick to look at.

Several addresses are "Boats met with at Broken Cross Rudheath". ;)

Here's the pub:

Old Broken Cross,Broken Cross Place.

Some great pictures on Google, right beside the canal.
Looks like a detached building now.

Maybe the building was split at one point thus forming 1,Canal Side.

The 1881 is free to search at Ancestry and can be searched by address

http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=7572

but I can't find anything for canal in Rudheath or Northwich.

If you just search for place name Rudheath there are only 505 entries so you could browse. ;)

Google maps finds:

Broken Cross?
Broken Cross Pl
Rudheath, NORTHWICH, Cheshire CW9 7EB, United Kingdom
01606 40431
"Category: Drinking Establishment"

but t doesn't give the name of the street it's on. ;)

The only street name I can find that is present both today and in 1881 is Pennys Lane (as spelled by Ancestry), so you could always start there and browse images.

Thank you Vera and Ann. The place they are living at was a shop and bakery. There was a stable next door. Friends daughter is saying it wasn't a farm but there was a farm nearby it. Will try Cheshire Family History society but will wait just in case of other replies on here.
