I am trying to find my great grandfather on the 1891 Census.
He was christened John Henry Hill but on the other censuses he is Henry Hill. He was born in Crowcombe in 1864.

this is the only census I cannot find him on

When did he marry, if he did, and whom?
Her name, date and place of birth?
Children? Names, dates and places of birth?
Parents' names, dates and places of birth?

You know all these things when you're searching. We don't. Any of them could be highly useful.

Some of us might even have known that Crowcombe is in Somerset, Williton reg dist. I didn't.

My gr-grfather was a Hill. It amazed me when I realized that Ancestry had managed to mistranscribe this simple name. Hile, Hele, Hell ...

But I'm not seeing that in his case.

Sorry I did not put enough information. Because I had found him on census for 1871,1881, 1901 and 1911 I did not add the rest sorry.

He marrried clara stokes from Brompton Ralph somerset in 1890( I have the marriage details) however in 1891 census Clara is still shown under her maiden name of "Stokes" lodging in Stapleton Bristol . This is why it is a mystery.
In 1901, they are together on the census with their three children in Mangotsfield Bristol. It states that the three children were born in cardiff S. Wales- the first one hilda born in February 1892.

also Thanks jansmith the 1881 is him definately.
and yes Janey Canuck -I have found some strange transciptions but had run out of ideas for trying on this one
thanks for any help anyone can give

I guess no one can find John Henry Hill or Henry Hill from Crowcombe Somerset born 1864 on the 1891 Census.

Just a question are there any other records back in 1891 that I could
go to to see if I can find him?

He had gone from being a Farm worker in 1881 census to an Engine Driver in 1901- so I guess his job could have taken him anywhere

JaneyCanuck

Nope, no luck.

I missed "Crocosvink" in the 1891.

And again, no one every points out what this means for posters who might not know.

Still searching for John HENRY Hill in the 1891 census and have now found an old photo saying he was a Tram Car Driver in Cardiff around this time.

At sometime between 1890 and 1892 he was living as a Lodger at 121 Treharris Street, Roath Cardiff, also shown in old paperwork. Is there a way of looking up the 1891 census through the address? I cant seem to do it on ancestry

Have you checked this one out? The image is not very good, but it looks like his birth place is just Gloucestershire, so not precise maybe a guess by the head of household? He is married, but no wife with him, and is an ostler/groom. It is a hotel, address Southport road - Annie Lydon is a widow and the hotel manageress, but her age is wrong as the 3 other Lydon's are her daughters.

Thanks for the speedy replies. I am guessing that he moved into Treharris road later than the census and it makes sense that the Head is the Tramway Inspector, he must have taken him in as a lodger as Henry was a Tram Car Driver.

Flip- thanks for your info I will look into it, although he was born in somerset not gloucester, but he was married and not living with his wife Clara as I found her on the 1891census in Bristol. so more investigation. I know from paperwork that he was in Cardif from at least February 1892 until at least 1896 but cannot find any tram records or the census one for 1891.

Flip

Flip Report 18 Aug 2013 10:51

What drew me to that particular census - he was farm servant, then tram driver - but the earlier trams/busses were horse drawn. There are no connections suggested in Ancestry for him in other census, and I know he was born Somerset, if he wasn't actually asked at the time the census info was given the hotel manageress may have assumed Gloucestershire because he was obviously in Bristol at some point as his wife was there.

Rose

Rose Report 18 Aug 2013 10:59

Flip- I quite agree and one particular photo I have which is marked 1895-roath
he is standing next to a tram with two horses so this could be correct.
I would be so excited if it is him,.
I am going to the library tomorrow to take a good look at the census.

COULD HE BE IN THE ARMY

Flip

Flip Report 19 Aug 2013 05:30

What occupation and address was given for Henry on the marriage certificate?

Rose

Rose Report 21 Aug 2013 18:44

Sorry Flip. Been off line for a couple of days!
The address he was married from was 18 Eldon Road St. Agnes Bristol, which was his sisters house. He was married on July 6th, 1890
I read the ocupation as Warehouseman- but am now having 2nd thoughts.
He had been working on the railway as an Engine Driver previously.

In 1981 I have found his wife Clara living in Bristol and for some reason she is under Clara Stokes her maiden name.
His first daughter-my nan- was born on 4th Feb1982 at 121 Treharris St, Cardiff and he was then a Tram Car Driver.
I know people sometimes were missed on censuses but I would love to find him and often they turn up somewhere with a spelling mistake or something.

Rose Report 21 Aug 2013 18:46

Dizzi
I am not sure about the army. I did look at thre records but unfortunately Henry Hill or John Hill and about that age seems to be very common
