Can anyone help please? Family history is that my father Andrew Kelly was in WW1 merchant navy was shipwrecked 3 times and then joined the Army.I would guess Artillery as he lost his index fire when the repeater gun jammed. His DoB 15.08.1895 and his address was G court Oxford Terrace Sylvester (Silvester) Street Liverpool His widowed mother was Margaret Kelly. How can I find his service number (s) as there are dozens & dozens of Andrew Kelly on Ancestry.
His brother Phlip was killed and he is listed as just P.Kelly so Dad could also be just A.Kelly
I have tried National Archives lloking for details by NOK but no luck so would appreciate any help

Re: The Army detail posted by Carol above on an Andrew at 17 Nursery St.

His records show a next of kin as 'Maria' Kelly (Mother), so I don't think it is him.

Thanks for all your help .Yes they did live in Johnson Street in 1901 .The Nursery Street is not them as they later moved in with my Dad's married sister and the Sylvester St is given as Next of Kin address for my uncle Philip (P) when he was killed .Ancestry has so many Andrew Kelly's I would probably use up loads of credits and still not find my Dad's records.I have been down the Ancestry road before and done just that.
Once again many thanks

Just one piece of advice/information. During WW1 if you had an Irish surname you would usually be put in an Irish regiment. Also, towards the latter stages as more men were being killed, the remainder of one regiment would be included into another regiment and would then probably be given a new service number. My grandfather was born in England of Irish parents and actually joined up in Fulham, and even though he was married and had children, he was sent to Cork to join an Irish regiment which then served in the Balkans as well as other places.

Thanks Betty for that advice Dad was of Irish parents so same might apply. We think he served on the Somme and lost his index finger when those machine guns overheated and jammed so will work on artillery basis and also as he was from Liverpool checking Lpool regiments
Many thanks

Hi Chris Thanks for trying to help.I have just received a reply from N.A. as to whether reverse of Dad's card shows any ships he sailed on and the answer is no information on reverse. According to find my Past they did occasionally list ships on reverse. One day out of the blue the answer may just turn up

Once again thank you
