Does anyone have access to baptism records?, I would like to know if my father was christened.
Also the link regarding Mary Catherine Griffiths who later adopted him and the fact Ethel and she had the same surname.
perhaps It was common for a relative to bring up a child if the natural mother could not cope, any ideas?

Hi Brian,

Is the 1911 census that Jax has put on your thread the correct one - the one that you say you have found? Is your grandmother Ethel Hilda Griffiths? If so, I would suggest that you get some of the cerificates, for example, her marriage certificate. As there was not a father mentioned on your fathers birth certificate and bearing in mind that his surname was Griffiths, the same as his mum, it is realistic to accept that he was born to an unmarried mother.

Regarding the very intimate details of your fathers birth and adoption, I would not advise disclosing all those details on an open board such as this. If anyone should require these details and you want to share them, then perhaps you could send them by pm.

maybe if you were to purchase the marriage certificate of your father's adoptive parents, this may give a clue to the connection (if one) to Ethel H Griffiths.

Sorry, regarding my first post, I meant to say that Ethel would have been my real Grandmother not my mother.

By the way, would a photocopy of my father's Adoption Certificate help at all, plus a copy of his actual birth certificate?
I'll sort out and send by attachment if this is possible, other than that I'll post you the details that are on the certs.

RE other children, approximately 20 Griffiths children were born in Oswestry reg district with mothers whose maiden name was Griffiths between 1911 and 1931, so it would be difficult to narrow down potential children for Ethel without more information to go on.

None of the births appeared to be twins.

Of course Ethel may not have given birth to other children in the Oswestry district.

Unfortunately Griffiths is quite a common name in the area.

Brian you say in your first posting that Ethel Griffiths was your real mother and gave birth to your father Ronald. Would'nt that make her your grandmother??

There are only two Mary C Griffiths listed as living in Oswestry in census 1911.

One is a single servant:

of course she might be listed as plain Mary Griffiths, or not living in Oswestry at that time.

This is probably the marriage of the adoptive parents, as I said before.

Marriage cert would give name and occupation of Mary's father, which might be a lead as to whether she is actually related to Ethel's family.

Thanks for your replies, sorry I didn't get back to you, been off line for the past couple of days, father in law is seriously ill.

Ethel I believe was born 1897 but I could be a year out on this.
I'm just wondering if my father was brought up and later adopted by a relative, Mary C Griffiths has the same Surname as Ethel and it is slightly common but not very common, but I would really like to know where Ethel was after she gave up my father Ronald. There is also a family rumour that Ethel gave birth to two children, one of which died very young, possibly twins.
