Hello,I'm trying to find out anything at all about my Grandfathers' family. His named was William (Bill) Winters and he was born in Tyne and Wear. (Gateshead ? ) in July 1903. He had at least two sisters called Sally and Gwen and at least one brother who i think may have been called George. Gwen married a Dutch man and lived in Holland and l think Sally moved to the London area. My Grandfather was in the Army and was stationed in Glasgow in the late 1920's where he met and married my Granny Margaret Ann ( Meg )Tasker. He never moved back to England and stayed in Glasgow for the rest of his life. Any info will be greatly appreciated, Thanks in advance Regards Linda McF.

Linda - if you know he was definitely born July 1903, what were his parent's names on the birth certificate?
There is no record of a birth in that name in 1903 that I can find.
You need to bear in mind that years of birth on a census can be about 1 year out. The census was taken before his 8th birthday in 1911 so when his age was given as 7 the enumerator would have taken 7 from 1911 and assumed a birth year of 1904.

If you buy that b.cert from the GRO, these are their ref #s that you will quote - order via:
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/
I think you ought to buy some credits on ScotlandsPeople - you can buy the m.cert there - it's actually much cheaper to just buy the uncertified image of the register page. Scottish m.certs normally give both parents of bride and groom, including the mums' MSs=maiden surnames. Unfortunately, for births within the kast 100 y, you can't buy the cheaper images - you have to buy certified birth extracts at 10 GBP (I think).

That could then be a possible for his father William on the 1901 census that Jax has posted? Hard to read his occupation on that one but looks like some sort of painter? Definately not an engine fitter!

You need to buy the marriage certificate for William and Sarah to get their father's names to confirm this possibility for Sarah.
Name: Sarah Ware Age: 17 Estimated birth year: abt 1884 Relation: Daughter Father's name: George H Ware Mother's name: Jane Ware Gender: Female Where born: Durham, England Civil Parish: Gateshead Ecclesiastical parish: Venerable Bede County/Island: Durham Country: England Street address:
Occupation:
Condition as to marriage:

Employment status: View image Registration district: Gateshead Sub-registration district: Gateshead ED, institution, or vessel: 62 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 202 Household Members: Name Age George H Ware 47 Jane Ware 46 Ralph Ware 19 Sarah Ware 17 Thomas A Ware 14 Sidney Ware 7 Julia Ware 12 John Humphrey 26 Minnie Humphrey 23 Minnie Humphrey 2 John Humphrey 7 Months
From the details that are on your grandparents marriage ceertificate that 1904 birth certainly looks like your grandfather. You should buy that certificate too and compare the parents details with those that William has given on his marriage certificate in Glasgow.

It may also be worth considering these ones from the 1911 census as being grandsons rather than sons as MarieCeleste
