Can anyone help me with the search for my Russell grt grndparents please?
My grandmother was born in August 1893 in Herstmonceaux E.Sussex. Her father was Alfred Horace Russell Farmer and her mother was Alice (ne Cook) Have looked in a number of places but had no luck. I can't remember how many brother's and sisters she had but I know they included boy and girl twins. She spent most of her life in Portmouth, Hants and Testwood Hants. Her name was Eva

I am so impressed with everything you have all done!
The Russell family are definitely the ones and incredibly you have found results which I didn't even want to complicate things with. My great grandmother's second marriage!
At the time of my grandmother's marriage Alfred her father was down as a farmer so I imagine life may have improved for them. I didn't know about the very youngest child born after the 1901 census and I had no idea that there was any connection with Kent.
The big 'scandal' in the family was that Alfred ran off to Canada at some point and I don't know if he came back!
Many, many thanks Maureen

I can't find Arthur b 1897, nor the twins, on the 1911, and no suitable deaths.
Nor can I find a birth of Charles unless he had a middle name (there is a Charles Alfred).
Charles and Alice told porkies about the length of marriage:
Marriages Sep 1913 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Hewlett Charles Russell Portsmouth 2b 1155 Russell Alice L Hewlett Portsmouth 2b 1155
Maureen says her g grandfather ran off and was dead by the time of Eva's marriage. So it's possible he died around 1912-13, somewhere in the world!

A tree on Ancestry says Charles Alfred Russell b Hailsham, June 05. And has another child Frederick Alfred Russell, 11/5/1901 - 19/8/1907.
It also says the marriage to Alice (Louisa) Cook was a second marriage for Alfred, and he was only 20 when he married her on 7 Dec 1890.
Off to look for a first marriage.

The Ancestry tree doesn't give his first wife. I can find several possibles, but none of them die before Dec 1890.
There is also a Julie on here with both Alfred and Alice in her tree - but when I searched there is no Maureen with them!
Maureen, do you have your tree on here? It would be most useful if you did.

The birthdate for Charles Alfred and the place definitely seems right. Puzzled by the Frederick but could he have died.
Grief I haven't heard of a 2nd marriage, makes me wonder if any of my lot on that side actually bothered with 'real' marriage at all!!
Many thanks
Will have to get back to you, head in spin over possible first marriage need to look things up.
Regards Maureen

Yes, Maureen, Frederick Alfred died in 1907, I put the death date in wrongly.
There is an Alfred Russell age 30 (EDIT 36), a farmer, married but no family with him, sailing from Liverpool to Quebec, September 1906.
Maureen, the point I made about Julie having a tree on here with your family in is that I think you should contact her to see if you can share any information for your mutual advantage. If you click on Search Trees at the top of this page, Search all trees, and put in either Alfred or Alice's details, Julie will come up there and you can send her a message.

Also what I meant, Maureen, is that when I search for Alfred in Search Trees, you don't come up as having him in your tree.

Sorry Maureen, my mistake, the chap going to Quebec is 36.
Problem about your tree is solved - you have mis-typed him as Afred.
Worth amending so people can "connect" with him.

Maureen is sure that Arthur 1897 and George & Mabel 1899 survived to adulthood, so should be somewhere on the 1911.
Given that the twins were registere in Hailsham, this is probably Arthur:
Births Mar 1897 (>99%) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Russell Arthur Horace Hailsham 2b 95
Maureen, did you tell me that he emigrated?

I know the odd bit of French learnt at primary school. Je suis means "I am". In German it is "Ich bin" and in Latin it is "Amo". I don't suppose a lot of people speak Latin nowadays.
Clever, eh?
I know no more French other than "Baguette sil vu plais".
Ah, then Arthur might be this fella:
England & Wales, Death Index: 1916-2005 about Arthur Horace Russell Name: Arthur Horace Russell Birth Date: 18 Nov 1896 Death Registration Month/Year: 1974 Registration district: New Forest Inferred County: Hampshire Volume: 20 Page: 0366
So, is there anybody else out there interested in this family.? Maureen isn't a Whizz at all this (sorry Maureen), so any help appreciated please.
So who, if anyone, did he marry?

Meg I'm certain that this is the right Arthur. He owned a house in the New Forest Area in the 1940-50's I shall look for his wife.
You are so right about me not being a whizz. at this! Still I suppose 3-4 weeks isn't long.
