Thank you for your responce (I am very new at this) I have found a record of his death but it only gives a name and Navy Sig.
I understand his middle name is Michel.

Where did you find the death record?

Potty

Potty Report 7 Mar 2010 11:54

Looks like he died in 1943 not 1942:

SINGLETON, THOMAS
Initials: T
Nationality: United Kingdom
Rank: Signalman
Regiment/Service: Royal Navy
Unit Text: H.M.S. Midge.
Age: 20
Date of Death: 04/11/1943

Service No: D/JX 231867
Additional information: Son of Henry and Alice Singleton, of Preston.
Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead
Grave/Memorial Reference: Sec. K.K. C. of E. Grave 443.
Cemetery: PRESTON (NEW HALL LANE) CEMETERY

Suzanne has another thread looking for info on Gertrude.

Edit: don't think this one can be the father of Thomas b1937 as he would have only been 14!

Would a 14-year old have produced a child with a 33-year-old woman?

I know it's biologically possible, but I would have thought it unlikely

Catherine

Catherine Report 7 Mar 2010 11:58

.............. but that's Thomas T and not Thomas M ?

Suzanne, how sure are you of your facts?

Suzanne

Suzanne Report 7 Mar 2010 12:00

Thank you so very much for finding that (so quickly) my father was left an orphan and has no memory of his family - so finding this about his fathers family is fantasic.

Flick, how do you know that Gertrude was 33 yrs old?

Suzanne

Please think again - look at the ages

How would a 14 year old boy from Preston father a child in Guernsey with a woman old enough to be his mother?

Suzanne

Suzanne Report 7 Mar 2010 12:03

I know my father Thomas Michel Singleton was born in Guernsey in 1937 to Thomas Singleton a sailor who died in the war and mother Gertrude Sarchet. She had a daughter 13 years older than my father.

Flick Report 7 Mar 2010 12:04

Catherine

Suzanne's OTHER thread says Gertrude was born in 1904

Catherine

Catherine Report 7 Mar 2010 12:15

There is a Thomas Singleton born in Guernsey:-

THOMAS SINGLETON - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 07 JUL 1870 St. Pierre Port, Guernsey, Channel Islands
Father: THOMAS SINGLETON
Mother: ANNE HAMILTON

probably too old to be your Thomas, but may be his father?

My uncle served on MGB/MTB 606 & I have some crew photos from 1942 &1943 which I could send to you via email if it helps- they may or may not show your great grandfather. Further assistance may be at hand from the Coastal Forces website. Regards- ANDY
