It will be legal if it has the word , written Adopted on the right hand side of the birth certificate,even if it was an open adoption or private one.it would still go through the legal process,,,,,,

It certainly wasn't done officially, or you wouldn't have been able to get her full birth cert.

Adopted children's records are confidential and only a 'short' birth cert can be obtained in later years

I will now try and work out where to go from here, ie how my mother was adopted, because I believe it was never done legally, done through a Dr. but that is about all I know.

If you felt like getting a copy of the cert of the marriage to Cook, you may find - if you're lucky - that her occupation is the same.

Ah, now that we know her full name, that does make Kay's find seem very likely to be correct.

Impossible to prove conclusively, as we don't know the age of Jean's mother, but otherwise it all seems to fit.

As you know she was a brush maker, I assume you do have a copy of the birth certificate.

Please tell us all the information on it - full name as stated on the cert, address, etc.
Any little thing might be a significant clue.

The tree on Ancestry obviously has the info as found, but that’s no proof that it’s the woman who gave birth to Jean in 1931.

The only hope is that there is a second forename for the mother on the birth cert, or that the address and her occupation are matched by the info about the woman who married Cook in Bristol, if Sue gets that cert.

We now wait for Sue to return..........................

Lang tree on ancestry has the forenamed Eva/Evalyn. Lang death as 2004.also has same named parents.

Let's hope the birth cert gives some useful information!

If it just says her name was Evelyn Lang, it's not much help.
That could mean that either she didn't give her middle name, or that she's a different person.

Not sure why people have been focusing on Evelyn Lang with a second forename. Unless the OP comes back to say that she gave a second forename when she registered the birth, there’s no reason to think she had one.

We need Sue to come back with exact info from the birth cert.

The middle name beginning with M may be a complete red herring.
