Does anyone have any information about a man named Henry Smith Holland born in 1874 in Derbyshire. He married Lillian Lawrence Keating in 1913 (approx) and had 2 children with her but i think he might have married before then. Any information would be greatfully received!

He will have married one of these ,but to know which you will need to find him on census in 1901.

There is no marriage showing for him to Lillian Keating ,so they prob never "legally"married

It looks as if he was born in 1972 in Lancashire not Derbyshire! ....so disregard the above 1901 census

Here he is on 1911,I cant get anyone else to come up with him,so he must either live alone or be with people of a different surname.

I did note that one ,but,it has the second initial as E and not L?

But is a very possible though,as I didnt look for an earlier marriage for her.

Oh thank you for your quick replies! I'm quite new to this and getting myself very confused!
I have found him in the 1911 census. He was living with Lillian Lawrence Keating in Wavertree, LIverppool. Her unmarried name was Lillian Lawrence Howard. That's definately him. It has him listed as being born in Roby.

I also found a Henry Holland in the 1901 census living with a Rebecca Holland and then to totally confuse myself another living with Ellen Holland. Is it more likely to be the listing with Ellen?

I'm trying to work out if he had any other children and what happened to them.

Hi
If you read through what we have posted then you will see that he was born in 1872 in lancashire.
Married in 1897 to Ellen Mee.
There do not appear to have been any children from the marriage, but maybe Ellen died in childbirth and the child died with her.
The 1901 census finds him with Ellen and then she dies just after it was taken.

The 1901 census of a Henry Holland with Rebecca is not him.

If he was living with lilian keating on 1911,then they prob couldnt marry if she was married to someone else and he was still alive.

Thanks for all the information. Really appreciate it. Was it common for the ages to be slightly out in those days? Henry Smith Holland in 1901 was 29 but in 1911 he was only 37?

FannyByGaslight

FannyByGaslight Report 22 Jul 2009 20:50

It certainly was.
If you can find many census where they
A} stay born the same place
B} stay born the same year
AND
c} Stay with the same christian name a lot of the time you will be doing well.

A lot of people seemed to use either their first or second name at random, said they were born wherever they felt like that day and had a guess at their age most of the time.
But of course a lot of them were illiterate and often didnt know where exactly they were born anyway if their parents died when they were young or they moved around a lot.
Also the census taker may not have heard of the little hamlet someone said they were born in ,so asked for the nearest big town and wrote that down.

Brill, thanks.. Cleared it up for me anyway and made it a lot clearer. Knowing which Henry to follow has meant that i have been able to go back further and find his father and grandfather. (I think!)

Thank you! I have searched on Ancestry and it's always come up blank.. I shall look into this to see if its him.. I've been really pleased with how helpful everyone is on this site, especially with someone like me who asks so many questions!
