Your William Dunbobbin WAS in the army (Private 7341, 4th Battalion, The Kings Liverpool Regiment), and appears in the 1901 census at the New Military Barracks in Fermoy, Co. Cork.

I have yet to locate him in 1911, but guess he was still with the regiment. He was awarded the 1914 Star, so was either still with the colours at the start of the Great War, or was recalled from the Reserve.

Can you give me some info I am also on ancestry and maybe able to dig around for a medal card for the first world war if that will help?
The other way would be to look at the nation archive site but it costs £2.00 for the information.
If you have any medals on the rim would be
rank,initials,surname,regiment and then his number.
Once you then get this information you can get his medal card and then go to the national archive you can get his service records. It's very interesting.
For our wedding anniversary march we are planning on going to Kew to research. My hubby's great grandfather and also this great uncle which is SLINGSBY. I have managed to get his family tree to 1841.
hope this helps.
yours
gail

Thomas Report 8 Jan 2009 12:31

Hi Dee, i have the Marriage Cert. it states that he is a General Labourer at time of Marriage(1915) What happened to him between 1891 and 1915 is becoming a mystery! Maybe a chink of light into this mystery is that on my Father & Mothers Marriage Cert(1940) it states that his Father(Wlliam) was a C.S.M. in the India Army(deceased) - he(William) died in 1936. Also whilst talking to my Aunt she mentioned that her Father(William) was in the Army. I wouldn't hold much store on My Father's info as he states that he is 21 on Marr. Cert. but in fact was only 18 yrs 5 months!! (bit of a Porky!). Sorry I have not got access to the 1901 Census at the moment - regards Tom

Hi Tom,

I had another good look for you last night, I basically looked at every Will* ( I left out the surname) born in Warrington around your Williams birth and I found Zilch.

Do you have his marriage certificate, does that hold any clues???

To access information on the censuses regarding soldiers, patients etc.. if you just normally add the details then go to the 1901 census you can revise details at the top of the page and add what they would be stated as in the census, like for example, son, head, visitor, prisoner etc... I tried this and stil zero returns for your William. (this is on ancestry)

Now could he have been hiding with my GG Grandfather??? Roll on the 1911 census!!!!! Then you can put your trowel away and get out your sledge hammer!!!!!

Hi Denise - thanks for your info. I have had considerable problems with Surname variations in my research! I am led to believe that people in the Armed Forces and other Institutions(Hospitals- Prisons etc) are included in the Census but i do not know how to access this info? - any help anyone?- regards Tom
