Which war?

2nd WW records are still with the MOD. This is the link to forms so that they can be ordered at a cost of £30

Over 70% of full WW1 records were destroyed during WW2 bombing, but its still worth searching.

To help us to help you, year & place of birth + where he might have been living would enable us to correctly identify if there is an appropriate pre 1920 record. Did he have a middle name?
Ancestry says it has 4,340 1914-1920 service records for Michael Murphy, some of which would be variations on the name. That excludes those that died or for whom the records were destroyed.
