Robert Report 29 Dec 2015 10:11

in 1826 was a member of the 63 Regiment in Hobart on Van Diemans Land , then with the Scots Fusiliers 99th Regiments through the 1830s promoted to Sergeant .As these regiments returned to England... Thomas remained in Hobart and populated and joined the Hobart Mounted Police Force until his death in 1869.
These dates and regiment info gained from birth registries of his children..He married Sarah Cox no idea where or when.

Would have been useful if this death notice gave a forename:

Tasmania, Australia, Index to Death Notices in The Mercury, 1854-1930

Name: Hill
Death Date: 16 Sep 1869
Parent/Spouse: Sarah Mrs
Age: 76
Other Details: of Harrington Street
Publication Date: 9 Sep 1869

EDIT: Looking at the actual article on Trove it appears that it was the death of Sarah, wife of Richard Hill. Very misleading.

Oh well, will leave for elimination.

Robert may already have this:

DEATH.
On Sunday, August 29, at the residence of his son-in-law (Edward T. Gilbert), Thomas Hill, who for 40 years served in the British army with credit and honour to his country, died a Christian in his 80th year.

Gympie Times and Mary River Mining Gazette (Qld. : 1868 - 1919) Wednesday 1 September 18

Haven't found anything for marriage to Sarah Cox (the 1837 application that Gins posted relates to a convict's application to marry, so unlikely to be anything to do with a member of the mounted police). Sarah was born c1800 going by the various death notices on Trove. I noticed on some of the family notices that they say "Sydney papers please copy" - wonder if that's where Sarah was from?

Have been off line for last few days, Thank you for your replies. I have the info re Edward Thornton Gilbert who married Thomas Hill's daughter Jane in Hobart 17/1/1857 and later moved to Qympie in Queensland. I believe Thomas and Sarah arrived in Hobart around 1826 with a son born 1823 (Charles William Henry Hill) who when his death notice in 1898 stated born England.. The connection to this belief is : when Thomas and Sarah grand sons wife died in 1906 she was placed in uncle CWHHill burial plot at Cornelian Bay Cemetery Hobart
Thank you Robert
