Hello

I was wondering if anyone could help me please

My son is writing about relatives during the second world war and is struggling with his project.

My great grandfather was a soldier in the army and served in the royal hampshire regiment. His name was Reginald Herbert Painter. I believe his rank to have been 'private'..... I believe his number was 5408887. know he fought in north africa and ended up as a POW in Italy. This is the end of his records. However, he did not die in the concentration camp as the volcano erupted and he was able to escape. He was presumed dead or MIA for several years until he encountered american troops who later helped to bring him home. He passed away peacefully in 2003 with his family around him.

However we are looking for any more details about his service, did he recieve medals? If so which ones and what for?, if possible what camp he was held at? im also trying to find a picture of him if at all possible during his war time

If anyone can possibly help I would be so very appreciative.

Thank you
x

Unfortunately, WW2 military records are still with the MOD

This is the link for obtaining them at a cost of £30 unless his widow is able to sign the application form
http://www.veterans-uk.info/service_records/service_records.html

They can take up to 9 months to arrive which isn't much help to your son.

As regards medals - the following may help

From what you say, its likely that he would have been entitled to the Africa Star.

A free search on Forces War Records suggest that they hold something about Reginald
