You have found him!!! Thank you.

Thomas Charles Griffin
Age in 1911: 28
Estimated birth year: abt 1883
Birth Place: Poplar, London, England
Civil Parish: Frimley
County/Island: Surrey
Country: England
Street address: Minden Barracks, Deep Cut, Deep Cut, Farnborough, Hants
Marital Status: Single
Military Unit: 43rd Battery Royal Field Arty
Registration district: Farnham
sergeant, single :-D :-D

My Grandad, Frank Albert Rogers RAMC was also at Minden Barracks.
He lived in Frimley Green after 1913 when he married. He also was a career soldier, joining in 1900 at age of 15 as a bugle boy in the Boer war.
I have a family photo of his wedding which includes Thomas Griffin.
The lady next to him I presumed was his wife, but isn't, not at that time anyway. My Grandmother has a few sisters so I will need to research to find partners. I am interested in sgt Griffin through his association with my Grandad.

Raymond if you would give us your grandfather's name and details we could see where he was in 1911 and whether he might have crossed paths with Sgt Griffin around then

however I'm suspecting that if he didn't marry your grandfather's sister, your interest in him is less keen? :-)

Are you actually wanting to know more about your grandfather's sister?

JoonieCloonie Report 24 Jan 2015 22:06

as a career soldier, a good chance he was in the military in 1911?

Name: Thomas John Greffin [Thomas John Griffin]
Age in 1911: 20
Estimated birth year: abt 1891
Birth Place: Camberwell, Surrey, England
County/Island: Military
Country: England
Military Unit: 2/ South Wales Borderers
Registration District Number: 641
ED, institution, or vessel: South Africa
private, single

the Ancestry user who corrected the name has not added any explanation, but the correction was only made a few months ago and the person has been active at the site today so it would be worth asking whether there is a connection

closest births are

Births Dec 1888
GRIFFIN Thomas John Camberwell 1d 901 S
Births Mar 1893
Griffin Thomas John Camberwell 1d 1018

he might have overstated his age in order to join the military ... however that 1883 TJG's WWI service record is at Ancestry and his attestation papers show no previous military service

in the 1911 there are several other Thomas Griffins but that one's birth place struck me as possibly related

but probably more relevant, there were two in the Royal Field Artillery in 1911

Name: Thomas Charles Griffin
Age in 1911: 28
Estimated birth year: abt 1883
Birth Place: Poplar, London, England
Civil Parish: Frimley
County/Island: Surrey
Country: England
Street address: Minden Barracks, Deep Cut, Deep Cut, Farnborough, Hants
Marital Status: Single
Military Unit: 43rd Battery Royal Field Arty
Registration district: Farnham
sergeant, single

Name: Thomas Griffen
Age in 1911: 25
Estimated birth year: abt 1886
Birth Place: Woolwich, Kent, England
County/Island: Military
Country: England
Military Unit: Xith Battery Royal Field Artillery (XI i.e. 11th)
Registration District Number: 641
ED, institution, or vessel: India
gunner, single

so that Thomas Charles Griffin who was a sergeant in the Royal Field Artillery in 1911 stationed at Minden Barracks is maybe the most likely?

Raymond

I think that Lucy Eliza Bailey married William Taylor in 1902

Raymond Report 23 Jan 2015 14:19

Sgt Griffin (Royal Field Artillery) is on my Grandad's wedding photo in 1913 and was a witness to the marriage details of which are in my Grandads "Soldiers Small Book"
I think he married my grandmother's sister Lucy Eliza Bailey at Southwark in 1902. I cannot find anything about him, if he survived the war etc.
He would have been a career soldier as he was Sgt before the war started, as was my Grandad. ( RAMC)
