Why does anyone do this? I don't understand.

If the information is not sensitive, there is no reason not to post it in a thread. It can always be deleted once the recipient has noted it, if the helper chooses.

And why would anyone not let others know what they are doing? That seems the height of rudeness to me, to see how obvious it is that others are wasting their time and do nothing.

Ditto for people who post requests and don't let on that they have information ... from whatever source.

Absolutely.
It's always useful to have a second opinion. A poster won't realise they've 'gone wrong' unless alternatively info is added to the thread.
The same applies if someone sends info directly to the originator with out mentioning it on the thread.

Totally agree Rose.

Might I also suggest that those helping off the boards when they find something positive, maybe just add a note on the original thread with an indication of what's been found?

Just a friendly reminder.

Could I just ask please that whoever helps on a query, it would be really helpful if they could also just post here that they are helping off the board.

It would have saved those who had done some preliminary searching following an original deleted thread from going any further if it were known that help was being given.

Thankyou.

Rose
