"Search all members' trees", which Pam suggests, may be best in this situation, if I've understood your query correctly.

Enter the name of someone in your tree, whom you think the person you want to contact will also have in their tree.
Then look at the right-hand side of the list of results, where the names of the tree owners are.
If you see the name of the person you want to contact, click on "Find out more" and send him/her a message.

But if you have no purple stars showing against people in your tree, it looks as if, as Kathleen suggested, that the person's tree isn't on GR, but is on some other site.

Though, it's unusual to have no purple stars at all, unless the names are very uncommon.. Even if there are no tree matches, GR usually lists various "record matches" in the purple star, which aren't necessarily matches with your relative at all, but only people with the same name and year of birth.

For tree matches, go to SEARCH at top right of the page and click Search All Member Trees.

Hi Josephine - welcome to the boards.

Do you have the person you want to contact in your tree and are you certain that they definitely have a tree on Genes?

Hi, I'm trying to contact someone I know who also has a family tree in my family, when I checked on the FAQ it said "for tree matches for a relation, you'll see a purple star in their name box" but I don't have anyone with purple stars. How do I get to see them?

Thanks
