have sent a couple of messages and said I'd understand if they were unaware of a possible half sister to James (1908) and didn't want contact

thank you both for replying. A lot of this particular branch of the tree is guesswork on my part, and sadly my nana is no longer alive to help ( bit of wish I'd asked more when she was still alive )

If you search "All Members' Trees" on GR (under "Search" at top of page), someone called Victoria has a James McPhail born Edinburgh 1935 in her tree - you could try contacting her, in case he happens to be your James - assuming James is actually his name.

Marriage:
1934 MCPHAIL JAMES
YEOMAN MARY TERRISS PORTOBELLO EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN 685/08 0118

Death:
1981 MCPHAIL MARY TERRISS
Other surname YEOMAN F 69 NEWINGTON EDINBURGH CITY/LOTHIAN REGION 746/00 0529

If the son's name is James, there are these possibilities for his birth, 1933-50:

1935 MCPHAIL JAMES M CANONGATE EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN 685/03 0728

1941 MCPHAIL JAMES M ST ANDREW (EDINBURGH) EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN 685/02 1069

1934 MCPHAIL JAMES URQUHART M HAYMARKET EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN 685/01 0124

1948 MCPHAIL JAMES WILSON M GEORGE SQUARE EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN 685/05 0706

Unfortunately, without buying copies of the certs there's no way of knowing which (if any) might be the person you 're looking for.

And James McPhail is such a common name that it's impossible to know where he might be living now.

James' mother is listed as Henrietta McPhail and he was classed as illegitiamate

Apologies as some of the information is a bit vague. I'm trying to find some information out on my grandmothers birth family. I know her birth dad's name was James McPhail, who I think was born around 1908 in Edinburgh and died in 1960. He had had a relationship with a lady, which resulted in my grandmother being born in 1932 ( my nana was put up for adoption ). He then married a lady called Mary Terris Yeoman ( think around 1934 ). I know from his death certificate was signed by his son - the only initial I have is J, so I'm working on the assumption his name was James too. I understand if the half brother would find this as a shock as he might not realise he has a half sister and not wish for any contact. Thanks in advance
