As her mother wasn't married when she was born, she may have been given up for adoption. If this was so, the link malyon gave you will lead to the Adoption Contact Register.
Register and hope that she has as well.

Do you know if her mother later married? Assuming she stayed with her mother, she may have informally taken her stepfather's name.

Have you searched all members trees (top right under Search) to see if she listed on anyone elses? If so, send a message asking how they are related, and explain your own.
