https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills

STEPHENSON Nicholas Ernest of 20 Houghton Av Cullercoats North Shields died 14 May 1988 Administration Newcastle-upon-Tyne 12 August. Not exceeding £70000. folio # 8852005619U

Although the letters of Administration should name all eligible heirs, if his wife survived him, she probably took priority. On the other hand, it may list surviving children, if he had any.
With the border with Scotland so close, he might have married there.

A copy of the Letters + Probate would cost £10. His DC would be £9.25. The informant could be a relative.

There are a number of Alan Stephenson births 1951-1953 ( as we don’t know his exact dob) which could refer to Alan. We’re trying to work out his mmn to see if he has more easily traced siblings who may know his whereabouts

What do people think – could Nicky request a BC search from 1952 with the checking point of a father named Nicholas Ernest Stephenson?

(Edit - OP now reported to ensure the above thread is removed. Post added by Nicky as below)

So do you have the MC? What were the details on it? How old was he? Were the witnesses from his side? What about his father so we can suggest his birth and potential siblings? Sometimes you have to go backwards and to the sides to come forward.

When you receive it, come back to this thread and add the details.

There's no need to give the venue or date as that is a genuine breach of your father's privacy and irrelevant to your search. :-)

A minor correction - they married in Islington, London

Name: Alan Stephenson
Spouse Surname: Coombes
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1977
Registration district: Islington
Inferred County: Middlesex (now Greater London)
Volume Number: 13
Page Number: 1560

Colchester is in Essex.

If you have the MC, please say who he names as his father, what his own age was, the names of the witnesses if they aren't obviously from your mother's side of the family, and possibly his normal residence. ER may show who else resided there. If they were Stephenson's, they could be relatives.

If you don't have a copy, you can purchase one for £9.25 inc ww p&p from

Credit card and debit cards accepted

Kay????

Kay???? Report 22 Jun 2015 23:04

You maybe able to narrow down his birth year from his age on the marriage certificate, and his fathers name could help in finding a marriage for Alan parents then work out any possible siblings who may be a tad easier to trace, than Alan,,as its not a unique name and there are many in the north east 1940---1955.
