atlantikman Report 14 Jun 2015 18:49

My brother, a keen metal detectorist, has recently unearthed a Silver War Badge bearing the number 134978 which relates to the above man. We would like to return this to any direct descendant. I have left some messages to various folk but have yet to get any response. My research indicates John Pears married Ellen Garvey in 1900 and they had three children: Annie born 1901; John born 1904 and William Edward born 1905; all born in Ormskirk Lancashire. I believe the John Pears born 1904 may be the same man who was a well-known footballer in the 1920-30's, aka Jack Pears. The Internet says this man was born in 1907 but I cannot find any such record. I have been unable to find any probable marriages to his siblings. The last know address found in Army records in 1920 was 3 Green Lane Avenue, Ormskirk. If you can help then please pm me.

In case it's of assistance

Births Mar 1904
PEARS John Ormskirk 8b 931

http://kjellhanssen.com/1980/01/01/john-pears-jack-pears-liverpool-football-club/

John Pears (Jack Pears) – Liverpool Football Club
Born: February 23 – 1904, in Ormskirk, in England.
Passed away:

so it does seem to be a match

but oddly, the google search result shows 1907 and the page itself shows 1904, as if it has been updated since google crawled it

1911 census in Ormskirk

Ann Garvey 55
Ellen Pears 33
Margaret Garvey 25
Michel Garvey 21
Annie Pears 10
John Pears 7
William Pears 5
William Gorvey 5/12

no other Pears-Garvey children shown born post 1911

this would seem to be brother William's death, unfortunately

Deaths Jun 1924
Pears William 18 Ormskirk 8b 815

JoonieCloonie Report 14 Jun 2015 21:06

Births Dec 1877
GARVEY Ellen Ormskirk 8b 808

search trees at this site shows

Ellen Garvey 1877 Alnwick, Northumberland

but there is no such birth in the index; it could be worth contacting that tree owner

this is the only death in the index that would match Ellen's birth (if she died earlier in the Dec quarter than her birth date)

Deaths Dec 1956
Pears Ellen 77 Howden 2a 126

Ann, I posted the full household info for 1911 above.

also for info this is cousin William Garvey's death

Name: William Garvey
Birth Date: abt 1910
Date of Registration: Dec 1967
Age at Death: 57
Registration district: Ormskirk
Inferred County: Lancashire
Volume: 10f
Page: 204

and likely marriage

Name: William Garvey
Spouse Surname: Woods, Edna
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1938
Registration district: Ormskirk
Inferred County: Lancashire
Volume Number: 8b
Page Number: 1941

one child to that marriage who is in a tree at this site, tree belongs to a close family member

see here: http://tinyurl.com/pzvjrx6

Jack Pears would have been the great-uncle of the tree owner here and that would likely be the closest living family, if sister Annie Pears did not have children

the cousins may have been close since they grew up together

one member on this site has John Pears, Ormskirk in their tree

if you go to "Search" top right hand corner of this page and click on "search members trees" put "John Pears, Ormskirk" in and you will then get "find out more" - click on that and it allows you to contact the tree owner through this site

good luck

Hello JoonieCloonie & AnnCardiff: Many thanks for your info. This also confirms my research. I have emailed two folk with John Pears in their trees, over a week ago now, but still to get any response. Also emailed a lady who is on Rootschat who states she has an extensive Pears tree - but again no reply yet.

In the Army records WO363 for husband John Pears, Ellen gives her DOB as 13 October 1878 -- maybe its should have been 1877 ??
The Howden Yorkshire death in 1956 for Ellen Pears looks promising -- I think I read somewhere that footballer John Pears travelled alot, moving about clubs; I think his final club prior to retirement from the game was Hull ??? Maybe his mum Ellen lived with him ??? Also I believe there have recently been a few footballers with the surname Pears -- maybe a link there ???

I'm going to try my local library later to check the old street directories -- they jump from 1912 to 1946, but they might have something in them at the Ormskirk address. Otherwise a trip to Liverpool later this week to check the Electoral Registers 1920's onwards.

Best wishes,
Paul.

Liverpool Gores/Kelly's Directories don't cover Ormskirk, and I doubt Liverpool Electoral Records cover that area either. So I'll try find a local library that may hold the Electoral Records for Ormskirk.

Paul.

Hello All,

Many thanks for all your assistance. I have written to the probable grandson of this man, who shares the same name, but has not answered my email.

Best wishes,
Paul.

JoonieCloonie Report 16 Jun 2015 17:18

yes indeed Paul, a little more sleuthing showed that tree owner to also have a younger John Pears born in that area in his tree

the marriage was in 1938 and there appears to have been only the one child to that marriage

(I would edit your post to remove the location, since we don't need to know that and the person in question may prefer not to have that personal info posted here)

excellent news and congratulations on the effort you made to reunite the medal with the family

I found a medal belonging to a family member on line some time ago ... unfortunately only after it had been sold to a collector (who I was unable to get put in touch with) ... and it had been sold a couple of years before I knew about the family member's military record. I wish someone like you had bought it!
