Hi Gill
The 'National Library of NZ' (Auckland) (on-line) has an 'Ask Us' librarian service -they will check their records including electoral rolls (past & present) and newspaper death notices for less common names. Worth a try.

As you have no contact with your niece, perhaps she would prefer that you didn't pursue this

New Zealand birth records have a long closure. You won't be able to search online.

If they married in the UK, you might be able to order their marriage cert, but even then additional details are required before it would be issued. Hopefully her father could supply those. The MC would give his declared age as well as the name of his father.
