I am researching/writing a biography of humanitarian – (R)SPCA, Animals’ Friend Society – and inventor Lewis Gompertz (1783/4–1861) and am on the lookout for any of his (or the Animals’ Friend Society’s) papers, archives, diaries, correspondences, pamphlets, tracts, models, portraits, etc.

I would be most grateful if you could let me know if you hold any such materials or point me towards them, and also any similar information/material relating to Ann Gompertz (née Hollaman), wife (1779–1847); Ann Hollaman, wife’s niece (1800–76); and, especially in connection with the Animals’ Friend Society, Thomas Ignatius Maria Forster (1789–1860).

Or if you have any queries.

Look in search all trees

if anyone is researching him/them..........get in touch

Surely the RSPCA would have the bulk of the papers, wouldn't they?

Lewis is in two GR trees...........

Thanks to everyone. However, as I said in the appeal, I’m after the private papers, etc, the stuff vital to biography. I’m well aware of the general material online etc. The RSPCA may well hold something (I’m yet to get down to their rather restricted archives) but LG broke with the SPCA in acrimonious circumstances in 1932 and set up the Animals’ Friend Society as an improved outfit and proved it. What I am after, and I apologise if I haven’t made this clear, are (as I said) ‘papers, archives, diaries, correspondences, pamphlets, tracts, models, portraits, etc which relate to the PRIVATE (non-SPCA, non-AFS) life.
With gratitude.

A number of trees on Ancestry, have you made contact with the tree owners ?

Barry

Barry Report 6 May 2015 19:34

Thank you very much, Rambling Rose. But which trees exactly? Ancestry is one thing; who has the stuff now is another. Ancestry will no doubt play a part, but only in tracking and tracing the likely holders of the relevant materials.
Best wishes

Yes indeed it's possible that none of the Ancestry trees with him in belong to anyone who has the materials you need, it's another place to try and no more. :-)

You can't assume that anyone has anything

There don't appear to have been any Gompertz children, and one assumes the unmarried niece was childless

Personal documents usually stay with families...........or are destroyed

try researching the Forster daughter............

Have you contacted the GR members?
