Just to point out that free bmd has not transcribed lots of the records for that year - if you look for all births in Nottingham for December 1966 there are a lot of Hills and not much else.

So stick to ancestry/fmp.

Who has 'asked' you to find this info?

Surely if it is the police and coroner's office appealing for info they have confirmation of his dob - from bc (or adoption cert), passport or employment details/NI number? None of which would have his birth name if he was adopted - and none would list his adoptive parents. They claim he was born in Nottingham, this must have come from somewhere surely they wouldn't pluck that out of thin air.

If he was adopted as a baby or very young child the forename(s) could well have been changed lots are as Det pointed out, and what is the point in trying to trace his original birth if you've been asked to find his adoptive family, his birth family gave up all rights to him (and visa-versa) when the adoption took place.

Don't know what your connection is - as you obviously know nothing about him - did he leave an estate?

Great that you have found a more likely birth Dave. I didn't have time last night to go through extra years.

EDIT - the only one in 1967 in Nottingham that I can find is a Lawrence David and not David Lawrence.

Thank you all for your contributions.
I'm just hoping that someone in this great community is looking for him.

It never occurred to me that an altered page number with a '/s' suffix means an adoption. It makes sense.
As well as the Northampton one in 4Q1966, there is also a David Lawrence registered 4Q1967 (a year out) in Nottingham with a /s suffix.

Rgds, Dave.

There is a possible birth of a child with the forenames David Lawrence born in the last quarter of 1966 who appears to have been adopted (there is a "/s" at the end of the page number on his birth reference) but the birth is in Northhampton rather than Nottingham.

I haven't given the surname here as if it's the wrong person he may still be alive. Will send a pm to David.

The best bet, I would think, is tracking down neighbours and friends of the deceased who he may have mentioned names to?

Normally we'd suggest that birth relatives register with the Adoption Contact register and hope that the person has too

https://www.gov.uk/adoption-records/the-adoption-contact-register

Unfortunately - and someone will correct if wrong - we were under the impression that if an adopted person dies their case file is closed. They were the only ones to be allowed full access.

You seem to be between a rock and a hard place - no birth or adoptive family and the person in question is deceased!

Thx Kath;
Cancel him being born Tarpey. That was based on his forenames *not* being changed, and was the only David Lawrence registered in Nottingham at around the right time.

I've already looked for a marriage of Mr Walters to a surname that can be associated with the birth of a David Lawrence. No luck.

David Lawrence Walters died in Shropshire this year. He is thought to have been born in Nottingham in November 1966. I have been asked to find his adoptive family and if possible his birth family.
His name could have been taken from D H Lawrence, the author. when he was adopted by a Walters family.

His birth (surname Tarpey) was registered in the 2Q in 1967.

How do you know what his adoptived surname is now? If he was adopted out of the family as an infant, its usual to be given completely new names.

If the surname change about because of being adopted by his mother's spouse, have you tried to look for her or other subsequent (half)siblings?

According to the birth index David Lawrence Tarpey was born in 1967. There is nothing on the index to indicate that he was adopted, although he could have been.

What other information do you have about him?

EDIT - there is a David L. Tarpey on the electoral register in Nottingham so I don't think this person was adopted.

Trying to find any info. David Lawrence Walters was born 1966 at Nottingham. I think he was born Tarpey and his surname changed when he was adopted
