Looking for relatives of Thomas Carter as his portrait hangs in Carter Bequest Hospital Middlesbrough The hospital is closing soon and we wondered if the family wanted the portrait themselves.
Thanks

Have you looked to see if anyone has him in their tree?

I take it you know when he was born and where?

A grammar school for girls was built with the benefaction of Alderman Kirby and the Carter Bequest Hospital was erected by a bequest from Alderman Carter. The Broomlands, was a home set up for socially deprived children and orphans. The Linthorpe Hotel public house, formerly a doctors surgery and residence, was opened in 1957 and stands within its own original expansive grounds. These grounds once contained a carriage turning circle, vegetable garden, orchard, and lawns. The grounds still possesses many species of mature trees around the perimeter.

Probably a later Alderman Carter
Carter Bequest Hospital, in Cambridge Road, has 44 beds across two wards and dates back to 1926. Plans to close the hospital in 1984 were defeated after major opposition from staff and users.

excerpt

FEW amenities generate as much public affection and loyalty as local hospitals.

The Carter Bequest Hospital in Cambridge Road, Middlesbrough, is one such place.

For when it was threatened with closure, it raised huge public outcry.

The Carter Bequest Hospital was opened on January 3, 1926, by Sir Hugh Bell and marked the fruition of years of anticipation and effort.

It was due to the benevolence of one man, Alderman Thomas Carter JP.

Twenty years previously he made a bequest, which had accumulated to around pounds 100,000 -about pounds 4.25m by today's value.

This had been sufficient not only to build and equip the new hospital but also to adequately endow it.

What this meant in the days before the National Health Service was that the Carter Bequest was not dependant on public subscriptions.

Thomas Carter got the idea of providing such a hospital after witnessing much suffering through sickness among the population of Middlesbrough.

When the building was completed it was a sensation, because of the many novel features it contained.

The building was a substantial construction with many large windows to allow as much sunlight in as possible.

Verandas were provided for each 10-bed ward, so that patients could be wheeled out to benefit from the open fresh air. The whole building was illuminated by plenty of electric lights including one over each bed, novel features in 1926.

Because it was so modern and financially independent it was the source of much local pride. …

So the bequest was done c1906

This is the family after Thomas's death. Edith and Theodore both still single, Mary is single cousin/companion. Gertrude is a servant. Still at the same house. Looks like Letitia is the one to chase up re a family. It appears that although younger than Theodore, Edith was left in charge.

Ronald Lambert Report 21 Jun 2015 07:26

Hi, I thought this had posted but looks like it needs doing a second time. My name is Ronald Lambert Penhale, I am the son of the late Raymond Courtney Penhale and grandson of Letitia EA Carter and Rev Thomas Henry Penhale. If the portrait is still available I would be very interested. However as I am in New Zealand it may be better if it went to my eldest son Jonathan Bruce Penhale in Manchester. Let me know at [email protected]. Many thanks Ron
