Welcome to the boards, lila.

Have you looked to see if William is in anyone's tree on genes, by using the search tab/Search All Member Trees, top tight?

Have you also looked for any of his family in members' trees?

Can you say what you hope for, and how much research you have been able to do

Perhaps the marriage took place in Scotland, in view of the fact that the family were there in 1848/9, when Margaret was born - if the census info is accurate

I am hoping to find a living relative, my Grandmother, Eliza Preston was taken from her mother in Charing Cross Rd in London in 1898, and sent to Barnardo Homes and then sent to Canada. She never saw her mother after 1898.
I have been looking for her family for 13 years after receiving her information from Barnardo's. Very little information on her mother other than her name, Eliza Preston aliases Sawyer, Clinton.

No marriage William Preston to a Sarah (any surname) in Scotland 1840-1854 OPR or RC

Not seeing the family in Scotland in 1841 - need Scotland's People site to access census originals rather than just transcripts to see if William Sharp a Plasterer is around.

In view of the difference in age between Sarah b 1828 and the next child Ruth b 1839 (as per 1851 census, but doesn't mean there aren't in between children elsewhere), I am wondering if Sarah isn't a child of William and Elizabeth - could she be Elizabeth's born when she was only aged about 16 and therefore actually not a Sharp? And the William/Elizabeth marriage was later

So how did you work back to these people in 1851 if you don't know anything about the mother?

When was Eliza (your grandmother) born?

How old was she when 'taken from her mother'?

Presumably, the mother was unmarried................

When was Eliza sent to Canada?

Jacqueline, I haven't found anything to definitely connect this family to my Gran. I did find a marriage for Eliza Preston and Henry Sawyer. Sawyer was one of Eliza's aliases. Her father on the marriage cert is William Preston, green grocer. Eliza and Henry had a child Rachel b. 1888 eventually deserted in the workhouses. Eliza, the mother,
died in Whitechapel Infirmary in 1899. All of these pieces fit with what is known about my Gran. Her records from Barnardo's indicated no one ever inquired about her after her admission in 1898. Young Eliza was four when taken from her mother, the mother was sent to Holloway Prison for neglect. The mother was previously convicted for drunkeness and begging. I just received Eliza, the mother's death cert, it said no known occupation and homeless. She died of Tuberulosis, and exhaustion. If this Eliza is the correct one she died a little over a year after getting out of Holloway Prison, sentenced to 3 mo hard labor.

Forgot to add, my Gran was born , according to Barnardo, in 1894, Cannot find a birth cert or a baptism record for her.

I also just sent for Rachel's birth cert, hoping it will tell me where she was born,
and maybe a clue to where Eliza may have been born, I'm sure it was in a workhouse.
