I am trying to locate my uncle Eric who went to live in Australia in the 1950's My mother is no longer with us and wanted to see if we could trace any family in Australia. He came from Yorkshire originally but when he left for Australia he was living with his mother Sarah Jane Bedford in Deal Kent. His father was called George and died 6 months before I was born in 1959

He might have been the one born in 4Q Barnsley.

This marriage matches with the mmn and mother's name in Deal

Marriages Jun 1925 (>99%)
Bedford George Hardman Barnsley 9c 587
Hardman Sarah J Bedford Barnsley 9c 587
.........

Bearing in mind his YOB, you may have to consider him deceased.

If he returned to the UK, this death needs to be either matched to another man, or considered. His name doesn't appear on Australian ER to 1980. Of course he may be a contented 89 year old still living down-under!

I was wondering if he married and had children?

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 26 Feb 2015 22:54

Difficult to tell.

So far no one has found him on Australian records. Even if they had, the Australian privacy laws would mean that any marriage wouldn't be on-line. Ditto for any children from that marriage.

Make sure that you have him on your tree, and search All Members Trees (under search, top right) to see if anyone else has him or his parents listed. If they have, send a message by clicking on the Find Out More button next to the listing.

There is only one other birth in 1925 for an Eric Bedford, which as it happens is also in Barnsley reg. In that instance the mother's maiden name is Jacques.

Are you in contact with any of his siblings? May be they know what happened to him.
As they may still be living, if you aren't sure of their names, look on
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl
Select Births
Surname Bedford
Mothers maiden name Hardman
Year range 1925-1950 (to find any late births)

Including Eric, there are 3 born in Barnsley, possibly 1 in Staincross and 1 in Dover, which might have been after they moved to Deal.

If you are already in contact and they have no additional information, I'd be tempted to buy his birth certificate just to rule out the 2001 death.
Find the birth reg on Freebmd then using the reference numbers order the certificate for £9.25 from
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

I remembered I had a book of my Nan's and he was born October 1925.

In that case we can probably rule out the 2001 death. Although information given on a DC is only what the informant believed to be true, its unlikely that both the day and the month would be incorrect.

Are you in contact with his siblings ie your aunts and uncles? They may have slightly more up-to-date information.
