Sheppard Report 27 Jan 2015 23:29

We are looking for Janet Dilys Sheppard born 1944 West Ham UK. On birth certificate it says adopted at the end with registrars signature. The adoption happened a few years after birth. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Welcome to GR and the boards.

The normal response it to ask if you have added her and your names to the Adoption Contact Register.
https://www.gov.uk/adoption-records/the-adoption-contact-register

If Mr Sheppard wasn't her father, was there the chance that her mother married the father or another man at a later date and it was he who adopted her? If this might have happened have you looked for a marriage?

Have you used the Search All Member Trees (top right under Search) to see if she is listed on this site?
There are 4 members who list a Janet Sheppard 1944 on their trees, 3 with no place of birth, and one with an address in West Ham. if you haven't already, or don't know them, send a message. You can check if they've read your message by looking in your Sent Message box. Unread ones have an envelope icon next to them.

You don't appear to have Janet on a tree under your own account. That's one thing that you can do along with adding her parent(s) names

You could find her birth reg on http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl and add a Post'em giving your email address in case she or a descendent comes looking. Use a 'throw-away' address for this purpose such as @hotmail, @gmail or any other free provider.

Even if you allow your sub to lapse, make sure that your normal email address is registered with GR. That way if this thread is found on an internet search sometime in the future, people can contact you by clicking on your name.

Good luck

One would expect the first name to remain unchanged when the adoption is not of an infant.

Too confusing and upsetting for the child to change the given name

[edited to remove discussion of another thread that turned out to be unrelated]

Lorraine ... someone has Janet Dilys Sheppard in their family tree at this website ... do you know that person?

click Search in the upper right then Search All Trees and search for Janet Sheppard 1944

(it can help to read the instruction posts at the top of Living Relatives too)

I can remember hearing this story some time ago when relatives living in Australia were looking for the same Janet Dilys Sheppard. One of these people still has her name on SEARCH. If you write to them I am sure they will share their knowledge with you. There was a possibility that Janet might be known to Dr Barnado, this was going to be looked into furthur. I don't know if that happened?
Good luck with your search, don't give up

here is the thread by the person I referred to who has Janet in her tree here

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/living_relatives/thread/1304049

there is also a post on Ancestry

http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/surnames.sheppard/1099/mb.ashx?pnt=1

(since the name is unique, google finds relevant results)

and this earlier one linked to from above

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/trying_to_find/thread/547449

and then with that user name (an earlier account for this poster?) this

http://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/board/trying_to_find/thread/541241

I tend to think that the people who have posted these messages are all connected and are all engaged in the same search

but maybe you can coordinate and keep to an existing thread here at this site now? :-)

as you can see, there is no need for new threads since if Janet or a family member does an internet search for her name, they find this thread and the others

as long as you each keep your email addresses current in the accounts from which you have posted messages, anyone who finds any one of them will be able to send a message to the person who posted it (for a fee of course, here or at Ancestry)

the post here about another thread has been removed (and I got a nice PM about it) so I have removed my comments about it and will just leave this here for now to explain.

My husband went to Manor Road school but was 8 years younger than your sister. We know the area well. That don't help you though
