If he was born towards the end of one year, his birth may have been registered at the beginning of the next. Might Herbert have been a middle name? Could the famiy have migrated to Scotland while he has a few weeks old and registered him in Scotland?

I know nothing about searching for Irish births, so will back away waving garlic and anything else you can think of :-D

I can't find his birth cert either...don't know why as I know where he was born and his year of birth. I'll keep trying but thanks very much for your input.

Might it be worth finding his birth reg and purchasing the certificate? It may not take you any further forward, but at least you'd have the facts at your finger tips.

Thanks for your input...I've had this difficulty for years and don't seem to be able to find any trace anywhere. I'm assuming he's be deceased. I don't know if he had a middle name for sure. The only UK death record I've found so far is in Hampshire, England and to be honest the only association here is the same birth year as his. If he died abroad then I'd assume there would be little chance of finding records.
I've managed to trace relatives of them just this week but they don't know what happened to him either. This new part of the family is in Hull under many different names obviously due to marriage and there's apparently only one relative left in Ireland.
As you said there's no trace of him anywhere in the continent :-(

And we all know what a basket case Zimbabwe is now - FH research records whether on line or not, have a very low priority.
We have the added problem that date bases for incoming passengers lists to the UK stop at 1960.

If you add the birthplaces of your relations to your tree, you'll stand more chance of someone connected trying to contact you

Southern Rhodesia became Zimbabwe in 1980

Do you know Herbert's exact DOB?

+++DetEcTive+++

+++DetEcTive+++ Report 23 Jan 2015 11:35

With respect, S Rhodesia is not South Africa.............not that we can seem to find him anywhere in the Continent! :-)

Added - did he have a middle name or initial? If he did die in the UK, that might help find the records.

I believe this is him as my Mum (Lily) and Herbert lived in Glasgow (I know it was Srpingburn) from the late 1920s and I know Herbert went to South Africa (Rhodesia). I have found a copy of the shipping list myself and I believe this is him but can't find anything after that. My Mum lost contact and I don't know if he returned or had family.

The last address on the passenger list entry is
17 Fernbank Place, Springburn, Glasgow.
Destination Southern Rhodesia

Is that entry relevant or a red-herring?

Herberts parents were Norman Guy and Etta (nee McLoughlin). Etta later remarried and became McNulty.
Born Portadown, County Armagh in 1917.

Welcome to the boards, Norma.

Could you say who Herbert's parents were, and when and where Herbert was born, please?

Thank-you.

Herbert Guy, 1917, no place of birth, in your tree?

Also, how is Lily related to Herbert?

Norma

Norma Report 22 Jan 2015 22:28

I'm looking for Herbert Guy or any living relatives of Herbert. Herbert went to work in South Africa from Glasgow/Southampton in 1947 but don't know if he returned. If anyone has any information about Herbert or any relatives could you please contact me.
Thanks
Norma McLaughlan (daughter of Lily Guy).
