Unfortunately I don't have much to go on...

I'm looking for a man called Joe Carter, he would be in his 80s or 90s now I think. I have been told he lived in norwich for many years however this may not be the case. He was in the military (I don't know if it was army, air force, navy)

Please help!

Welcome to the boards Louise.

Needle and haystack comes to mind!

How did you come by his name? if you know who his parents were, we might be able to find a possible birth and work from there.

Might Joe be a dimuntive of Joseph? What else do you know about him or his relations?

He sounds as if he was of the generation who if they were too young to serve in WW2, would have been involved in National Service, and in his case stayed on.

Considering his possible age, you must bear in mind that he may have died.

I know it's such a long shot. He is actually my grandfather...My mother has no interest in knowing exactly who he is. I may be able to get more information from my Nan however from the details I have managed to get, my Mother was not a planned baby at all...in fact far from it. He came back when my mother was 6 weeks old and asked for my Nans hand in marriage however her father showed him the door!

I will try to get some more information

I am sure Joe is short for Joseph however apparently he just went by Joe. I know he was in a service man, he saw my nan when suited him and he was back from serving

Unless your grandmother can give you more detail about the man, I feel this is likely to be almost impossible

Could it be possible this man was doing his National Service when he met your grandmother?

the Joe Carter who died in 1975 was born in Wisbech registration district in 1917 ... I will not put details here because I think he is not your man, see below

Louise for early records like that birth you find them here free of charge

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

for later records you usually need somebody with a subscription at a pay site

there is a 1950 marriage for the same name in Downham which is where the 1975 death was

(the birthdate on the death record matches the time of year the birth was registered in 1917)

but you seem fairly sure that your Joe was not married at the time your mum was born which was after 1950 ... so probably not that man
