I had hoped to get more research done before coming to the forums but every time I type in 1946 I get results from 1972 and when I type in 1974 I get results from 2007, so I'm a little stumped.

I'm looking for information on a John MacKinnon from the Isle of Skye. He would have been born around 1946, maybe a few years before. I know that looking for a John MacKinnon from Skye is like looking for sand on a beach so I have been trying to do my best to narrow it down.

He was in Lincoln, Lincolnshire around 1973/1974, when he would have been about 28+. He was in hospital there for a while but apparently all of his records were destroyed in a fire at the hospital.

I don't have any massively useful information about him, just a description.

I did try checking for my mother's name (married and maiden, just in case) in the census of Lincolnshire but I didn't find at trace of her either.

I know that very little of this is helpful but, as I said, I was hoping to find more before coming here. I'm just not very good at this.

Welcome to the boards Shann

If you are looking for Scottish records Genes do not hold them , you need Scotlandspeople which is a pay to view site

Or are you looking for him on the electoral roll?

My issue with Scotland's People is that you have to pay for each record you view so I was hoping to narrow down the list of potential MacKinnon's before jumping over there.

When searching electoral rolls, you will need the address, not the name.

Census records are taken every 10 years and the most recent available one in 1911.

You can do free searches on ScotlandsPeople and eliminate a lot of people by narrowing your search - you have birth within a few years, and place, so how many have you found on the free searches that fit those criteria?

However, if you find that only one John Mackinnon was born on Skye from 1944 to 1948, how are you going to prove it is the one you want?

If he was in hospital around 1973, then whether the records were destroyed in a fire, or not, surely medical records are confidential?

I doubt that your mother would appear on any census, if as seems probable, you were born in 1973/4

Do you have an address for her on your birth cert?

Have you looked for that address on the Electoral Roll in the main library for the area?

There are only 2 records showing in Bracadale, Portree, Sleat, Strath, Kilmuir, Snizort and Duirinish for John Mackinnon 1945 to 1947.

1 in 1946 in Snizort and 1 in 1947 in Snizort.

I may have missed some areas of Skye, so suggest you check.

If I am correct, you only have 2 births to pay for credits.

So nothing like sands on the beach.

If he was born earlier, then, again, there might only be a few births.

However, my question still remains, how will you know which is the correct man?

Using Scotland'sPeople and having deleted the births showing in the rest of
Inverness shire under which Skye then came, these are the births 1942-49 for MacKinnon which include the name John. If you know he was only John, then there are even less. Unfortunately as the births are less than 100 years old you would need to send for the certificate - currently £12.
