hi Gina, thanks for your PM, you say you see your name on freebmd and would your mother's be there

I'm going to try one more time :-D

I sent you the registration details for your birth (and you can see them now on freebmd)

You need to order your original birth certificate.

it will have your mother's full name on it

only her surname shows in the index (which is copied at freebmd)

the actual certificate will show her full name

that -- and your adoption file -- is the only way you are going to find her name !

it is not in any record that you can access on line ... it is only on your personal birth certificate and in your personal adoption file

once you know her name, then yes, if she was born in England/Wales, you will be able to find her birth registration info at freebmd

... but if it isn't at freebmd then it is likely she was born in Ireland ... but you will still be able to search at freebmd, once you know her name, to see whether she married in England

you go here

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/Login.asp

and set up an account

then you go here

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

to start the ordering process

click 'Order a certificate online now.'

and follow the instructions, and be sure to tick

'If you are an adopted person requesting your original birth certificate please tick here'

when you get to that page

then you just fill in your name and birth registration details and submit your order

I don't know how long it is taking to get certificates these days, it's been some time since I ordered them, but maybe a couple of weeks

when you get it, it will show your mother's name

and that's what you need to do! :-)

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 23 Sep 2014 18:13

really all ... it is right there on the GRO website ...

>>>> 'If you are an adopted person requesting your original birth certificate please tick here'

and then you do *not* need to know anything other than your birth name and the registration information

Surname at birth *
Forename(s) *
Year
Quarter*
District name*
Volume Number*
Page Number*

that is all ... I sent Gina the registration info for her birth in case she didn't have it

so Gina you *can* go ahead and order your original birth certificate simply by going to the GRO website and registering and filling in the form and paying by credit card

it's simple and quick and easy

I have recently obtained the birth certificates of 2 people adopted as children without knowing the forename.

I have generally found the gro very helpful and I'm sure if Gina says that the surname was McAuley but that she is not sure of forename then I think they will be happy to send it.

I also thought it meant short, it was only last week that a lady at the gro told me what it actually meant!

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 23 Sep 2014 17:35

once you start the certificate ordering process at the GRO website

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/default.asp

you get to where you have to enter all the particulars for a birth in the last 50 years

BUT when you tick

'If you are an adopted person requesting your original birth certificate please tick here'

the extra fields disappear and you do not need to enter all the details of parents' names etc

just the standard info that is in the list that then appears:

Year birth was registered
Surname at birth *
Forename(s) *
Reference information from GRO Index
Year
Quarter*
District name*
Volume Number*
Page Number*
(* is the required information)

so Gina as far as I can see you absolutely can order your original birth certificate with the information you have now

and while certainly you want to go through the process of accessing your adoption file, getting your birth certificate will tell you your mother's name

I have heard people say it meant short .....so just took their word for it

The poster knows her birth name and date of birth as it is mentioned on the thread but wonder if not knowing her mothers name could be a problem??

angelinab

angelinab Report 23 Sep 2014 16:30

The 's' means 'supplementary tape' according to the lady at the GRO. It indicates that the birth has been re registered. This may be due to adoption or a child being re registered after the marriage of his/her parents.

If you apply for a certificate from within the last 50 years, they usually ask for some details to cross check although this doesn't always happen. The mothers maiden name is usually sufficient (I use ancestry to check records and the mothers maiden name is given). You have to order them via telephone rather than the website.

They send out the full certificate which does have parent(s) names on it.

There is a section on the gro website to order your birth certificate (as an adopted child), but from memory I think you need to know your birth name. If this is the case, you should still be able to get it via telephone using the above method.

jax Report 23 Sep 2014 15:59

I was under the impression you could only order a birth cert less than 50 years ago if you knew the full details.....So mothers name would need to be known I would of thought?

Also the birth reg has a 'S' doesnt that mean short cert? which would'nt include the parents names

Correct me if I am wrong

hi Gina,

I was adopted in 1966 and have applied for my Adoption File from my local Social Services. In Essex there is a wait of approx 1 year. This will definetely give you your birth mother's name (and possibly your fathers). I'm lucky in that I have already had contact with my birth mum. Once you get her name you should registar your details with the GRO in case she too has registered her interest in having contact with you. The Agency that placed me for adoption were very unhelpful and not at all sympathetic. Good luck. Alison

I'm not totally clear on the process Gina but as I understand it you can obtain your *original* birth certificate before it was altered by the adoption, and that is really what you need, also as Shirley said the adoption file itself with the info about your mother and possibly other family

what I was wondering about the marriage was whether it was your mother marrying, not necessarily marrying your father

it does seem to have been a woman from the Belfast area who married in Weymouth but did not stay there

once you know your mother's name, if it matches that marriage you can also obtain that marriage certificate which says her age and her father's name, and the witnesses' names could also tell you something for instance if a sister or brother was a witness

yes fingers crossed that the children's society can at least point you in the right direction for getting your adoption file, I believe you have to meet with a social services worker first to access your file and they can also assist if you wish to try to make contact

Hi all. Thanks for the posts. So I have my papers but no official ones. My birth cert only has names of by parents now. I have contacted a childrens society where my adoption took place and are looking into it. Fingers crossed some good news.

I don't believe my parents stayed together so regarding the marriage I really don't no. Until I no names and dob's ect I can look into it more.

good info Rose

I hope Gina returns ... she has read my private message to her but I have had no reply

I added the info here about that possible marriage after sending the private message so I hope she comes back to the thread and sees that and your follow up and lets us know about whether she has her birth cert / complete adoption records ...

The couple that married in 1968 moved to Anrtrim (very close to Belfast).

They appear to be living together in 2002 but not after that - slightly different spelling of her forename though.

Sending you some info. about that couple.

Is it the actual adoption file you have rather than the papers generated after the adoption

Adoption files usually give the mums name and reason for giving the child up for adoption and any other family info asked for at the time

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 18 Sep 2014 15:50

I have sent you that info Gina

I'm wondering ... in Weymouth district there were several McAuley events in the 1960s

there were births to two couples who didn't marry in that district ... one of them might have married in Northamptonshire in 1949 but that would have left a 10-year gap between their children ...

there is a marriage in Weymouth in June quarter 1968 for a Ms McAuley who does not seem to have been born in England/Wales

there doesn't seem to be any further record of that couple in England (no children, no subsequent marriages, no deaths, not on the current electoral roll)

it is possible that this was your mother since the time and place match up with when and where you were born ............... but first you need to see whether your birth certificate gives her name, if you don't have it

in any case I wonder whether those other Weymouth McAuleys might be related to your mother?

if you go to

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

and just ask for 'any event' for the surname mcauley in Weymouth district you can see the events in question (I am not putting details here because the people are all likely living)

JoonieCloonie

JoonieCloonie Report 18 Sep 2014 15:13

hi Gina, do you have your actual original birth certificate?

since the registration of your birth shows your mother's surname as Mcauley, it would seem that her name must be there, unless there was something unusual happened (she left you in someone's care without giving her full name, for instance?)

if you don't have the birth certificate you can order it from the General Register Office ... if you need the registration details they can be sent to you privately (best not to post your personal info publicly here), I am looking at them so I will do that now.
