I am helping my wife search for her birth mother. We have my some of my wife's adoption details. Her mother’s name is Ann S Murray born approx. 1940 near Durham/Newcastle upon Tyne area. We are just looking for some advice on how to find out more information. We have discovered some records exist in Newcastle General Hospital but they have initially refused to release any details. Any help would be appreciated in tracking her or her family.

Welcome to the boards....

Has your wife got her original birth certificate and has she already received her adoption file? If not, she needs to request them.

If you have an address from the birth certificate, the first step may be to get the electoral rolls checked out to see who else was living there a couple of years each side of her birth - could be grandparents or relatives.

Register on the adoption contact register - you never know her mother may be looking for her. You'll find help and information from here:

Good luck

She has her original birth certificate.
We found details for natural mother after her adopted mother died a few years ago.
We were in Newcastle recently and found some additional info, but getting access to it may be difficult as we live in Australia.
The birth certificate did not provide a home address, probably not unusual for that period
My wife was born at Hopedene (now demolished) in 1956, I have found some info on the general area.
Thanks

Unusual, but there was only 1 Ann S Murray born between 1935-45, so long as you have the right spelling. Although there was also an Anne S Murray born in the same timeframe - so could have been either of them. I thought there would have been more possibles, as Murray is not an uncommon name.

Does the certificate give her middle name?

There is a member on this site who has Ann S, and her parents in her tree - do a search (search all member trees) and you'll find her - BUT she may be the wrong one so take care.

No matter where you live, your wife is entitled to request her adoption files - check it out on the link I posted.

There a few possibilities from GR website.
Most of the indices only provide a short form of the name (no initials)
Her full name is Ann Scoular Lloyd Murray.
Her age is from my wife's mum recollections of the adoption.
From our searches we have found 3 possible matches in my research so far:

ANN MURRAY, Birth Year 1940, Gender Female
Mother's Maiden Name HALL
Year 1940, County Durham, Event Quarter 2
District DURHAM NORTHERN

ANN MURRAY, Birth Year 1940, Gender Female
Mother's Maiden Name PATTERSON
Year 1940, County Northumberland, Event Quarter 4
District NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE

ANN S MURRAY, Birth Year 1940, Gender Female
Mother's Maiden Name SHERIDAN
Year 1940, County Yorkshire, Event Quarter 4
District CLEVELAND

The first one is the most possible, need to get my wife to order the birth certificate, then wait to see if is the one.
I will get her to checkout the link you provided, also she is interested in going through Jigsaw locally to see if they can help.
I have searched the Family trees, but with no success.
I have the GRO forms printed, so I will get her to lodge them.

Thanks for your help

Kevin

Does that full name come from your wife's birth certificate or from elsewhere?

Getting the adoption file is essential to find out more information rather than rely on memories from the adoptive mother - she may not have been right about the age, and Ann may not have been local to the area of birth. Many single mothers were packed off to friends/relatives in other areas to hide their pregnancies.

Just a word of caution, you need to be careful about posting birth details of possible living people - this site is not secure and the names would come up on a google search.

ADDED: Should have said, if the BMD index only states Ann as a christian name, then that is all that will be on the certificate for the child's name - so I'm not really sure a certificate will help until you have more information.

That's a lot of surnames in her name. Were any of these hyphenated?

You might want to check Scotlands People for births. Her name has a Scottish naming convention about it.

I think Rose is onto something there - 1939 birth is on Scotland's people. But miss off the Lloyd part to find it.
