Looking for my father

I am looking for my birth father, a Mr John MacKinnon. He said he was from the Isle of Skye but my step father says he was from the Scunthorpe area (There was bad blood between the two so I don't know how accurate this information is). He would have been born in the 1930's - 1940's although that is a guesstimate (My mum was born in the 40's so I based it on that). He was in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England in the early to mid 1970's, which is where he met my mother.

I have a bare bones description of him, around 5ft 10, fair to reddish hair. He might have been in the military, as there are several RAF bases in Lincoln.

I have posted in here but I am not sure if my father is still alive or not.

Any help would be appreciated, even if it's to disqualify a John MacKinnon from my search.

Thank you.

Welcome to the boards, Shann.

There is no birth for a John MacKinnon showing on free bmd for Scunthorpe or district 1930 -1950.

Do you know if he was married when he met your Mother?

There are lots of John MacKinnon's in members trees on here who were born in Skye.

There is a marriage for a John MacKinnon in Grimsby in 1978. Do you know anything about him after your birth?

Thank-you

Is he actually named on your birth cert?

He isn't named on my birth certificate as he was not married to my mother. My mother's husband was stationed in Toronto, Canada at the time so he is not my father.

I'm not sure if he was married or not however, when my mum decided to tell me about my father she did state that I had brothers and sisters. She did admit that she didn't know this for certain though, so it's not really helpful.

Patchem, thank you for finding that out. I have no clue how you did that so fast! And yes, John MacKinnon's from Skye are plentiful. I know very little about him unfortunately and, as my mother has passed, I can't ask her for more details. My stepfather doesn't really want to talk about the subject, or to me, so I can't ask anything more from him.

I have sent messages to several people who have a John MacKinnon on their family tree but I have yet to get any response, However I did only join a few days ago so I am still patiently waiting to see what comes back.

Thank you both for your swift responses, you give me hope that I will actually find him.

The reason for asking about his name on your cert was mainly to try to verify the spelling, as the name could also be Mckinnon.

He could have been named if he'd wished to acknowledge you

Have you thought of looking at forces Reunited, if you think he may have been serving

Has your mother not mentioned what he did for a living?

Thank you for the Forces Reunited link, I shall check that out.

As for my father, I know very little about him, I'm pretty much flailing around here. However thanks to a very helpful member or two, I now know he wasn't born in Scunthorpe and he may well be the John MacKinnon born in 1941 on the Isle of Skye. I'm clumsily trying to research his kin at the moment.
