Find Living Relatives

Hi my name is Stacey Liddell. I am trying to find my mums biological dad. She does not know much about him apart from his name is John Devlin , he worked as a washing machine repair man and he married her mother
Catherine Kerr around 1965. The last know area he stayed was in springburn, Glasgow in the 1960s. Then following my mum does not have any more information about him. She thinks that he had a sister/ relative called either rosemary or Annemarie. She also says that she is sure he moved to England at one point, so we are not even sure if he maybe still stays there or if he's back in Glasgow or even if he has passed away. well the marriage cert to Catherine will give his age and fathers name if known. that would be the place to start .

If the marriage was in Scotland then you need Scotlands People website .which isnt a subs site. to find and order a copy of the marriage cert from.

Took a look but not seeing any marriage on Scotlands people or on the England /Wales records.

Where was your mum born ?

Devlin is an irish surname

If your mother was born in Scotland her birth certificate will give the date and place of her parents marriage.

If you contact The National Archives of Scotland, they will give you a quote for the cost of photocopying the divorce papers. They may reveal more information on your Grandfather.

Shirley, note that Catherine's surname is actually Thomson.

John and Catherine married in Bridgeton in 1959. Order a copy of the certificate to get John's age and the names of his parents. Check the witnesses as they may be related to John. With the names of his parents you should be able to track his siblings, if any. This would be best done at either The Scotlandspeople Centre in Edinburgh or the Mitchell Library in Glasgow where you can look at more recent BMDs for a daily search fee of about £15.00

Hi everyone. Thankyou for your help. I really Dont have a clue how to work all this. the site etc. So thanks for your help. I was wrong my granmothers maiden name was Thomson not Kerr. Then I seem someone write about their marriage certificate but we do not have that unfortunately. And the birth certificate that my mum has is the abbreviated version. So doesn't have as much detail as the full one. Also found out late last night thatthey did get married on 6th may 1959. So thankyou to rootgather for finding that out aswell and the place of marriage. Means a lot people trying to help me. My mum also thinks that he had a couple of sisters. One that unfortunately got killed with a bus in Glasgow and not sure about the other one. She also thinks that a family member was killed in a house in Glasgow somewhere. I know I've not a lot of informatioj to go on but really do appreciate all the help. And sorry if anyone has wasted their time. Thanks again xx

You can order the marriage cert through Scotlands People website

You have to buy units to pull up the marriage record then you order the cert through them

They used to be £10 but not sure if they are still that price

Your mum too can order a copy of her birth cert either though Scotlands People or through the GRO if her birth was in England/Wales

Thankyou. I was just on there. Its £12 now. But the names on that said they got married on 1/1/1959 however my mums brother birth certificate it says they got married 6/5/1959. Think we are going to buy it anyways just to see. Thanks again xx

Stacey, don't worry about the slight difference in the date of the marriage. It depends on the information given by the informant of the birth. The names and timescale are correct and I'm sure it will be the correct marriage.

I don't know how familiar you are with Scottish marriage certificates. The certificate will give John's age, occupation and address. It will name his parents including his mother's maiden surname. It will give names and addresses for the witnesses and hopefully one will be related to John.

If John's mother died in Scotland, you can search on Scotlandspeople for her death registration using both her married and maiden surname. If you order a copy of her death certificate the name and address of the informant may be more recent and help you with your quest to find John.

Aww does it not. It probably will be the correct marriage then. My mum is wanting me to order it online so I'm going to do that for her and go into Mitchell library next week I think... Thankyou so much for your help again. Appreciated lots. Thanksxx

Stacey, don't waste money ordering it online if you are going to the Mitchell. While you can't print off a copy of the registration, you can make notes. Just be sure to write down everything from the registration. Remember to 'phone the Mitchell and book in. If you can, try to spend the whole day there. Once you have paid your daily fee you can look at as many BMDs as time permits.
