Although the marriage might have taken place in your mother's 'home' area, the 1951 event was registered in Surrey North.

You and your sister had your births registered in the Surrey S W district.

Only mentioning it so that it gives us a geographical starting point.

There are marriages listed in 1959 and in 1970 for a John A Bird in Surrey Mid E.

As Jax suggested, the best bet would be to purchase your parent's MC as that would give his father's name. There is a better chance of finding the correct birth.

As you can appreciate, there is a possibility that he may have died. The date of birth is shown on the indexes from about 1969, and are on-line to 2006/7.

You can find references needed to order the birth and marriage certificates either on this site, or for free on
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

Certificates should only be ordered from
http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/
They cost £9.25 each, which includes the cost of world wide postage and packaging. Major credit/debit cards are accepted - your provider would convert to AUS $

I am trying to find my father. All I know is his name and possible birth year of 1926. In 1951 he married Annette Christine Bigi. They had two daughters - Sarah Anne (1952) and Alison Jane (1956). The marriage broke up in late 1950s. Annette remarried and then took the two girls to Australia with her new husband. I (Alison) am hoping my father is still alive. Please can anyone help? Many thanks.
