Hi Reggie,
Thank you for your help. I will take up your suggestions, especially the Scottish connection. Mary Myles nee Finlay was the daughter of a Scottish man, Peter, from Fife who migrated to Ireland with his brother William to work on the Shannon & Erne navigation schemes. Mary's mother was Irish and R/C according to the 1901 census. all I know about her from records is her death, 1904, her first name, Maria, her name mentioned in a local paper that recorded the sudden death of her son, James - coroner's court report and the record of her name on a tombstone. I cannot find her marriage details. All her children were born before state reg. of bdm.

When do you think Civil registration came into force in Ireland?

longford Report 7 Jan 2014 16:28

Hi Reggie,
From memory, 1864. Marriages of Protestants in Ireland were, I believe, registered from 1846. I have no knowledge of the religious rite under which Maria married Peter. All their children were raised Presbyterian. Maria is interred with her husband and son in the Presbyterian churchyard in Longford. No record of those interred in the churchyard survives beyond tombstone inscriptions. I checked with the Presbyterian Historical Society in Belfast and they do not hold burial records. The R/C parish registers for Longford have no record of a Peter Finlay marriage. Maria is a mystery!
