Martin was adopted between 1954 & 1958. His birth mother was Dorothy Smith. I am his sister and would dearly like to trace him but have drawn a blank so far

I have done a quick search of ancestry and between 1954 and 1958 the following babies were born to mothers with same maiden name.
I have only looked at the Martins with NO middle initial.

Aussietrish, wouldn't it be better just to ask Sandra what part of the country her Martin was born in? rather than post the birth details of several unrelated peopl who are almost certainly living and may well not want the facts of their birth displayed in public on the internet in a discussion of their mothers' unmarried status ...

We know when Sandra's Martin was adopted but we don't even know whether that was the period when he was born, and I would imagine he was born before that.

Have you added yourself to the national adoption contact register?

If not..................it would be a wise move to do so.

This assumes that the birth etc took place in England/Wales. You have given no clue as to location

Sandra, first, welcome to the boards.

I did a tree search and found that you have Dorothy in your tree so was Martin born in the same area?

If Martin is looking for his family, he might have joined a site like this so make sure you search trees here for him and mutual family members ... no one else seems to have your Dorothy though.

(someone with a name like Martin's has mother Dorothy born in the same place at close to the same time, but I checked and that seems to be a different Dorothy who married before 1954 ... )

The problem is I have no idea where Martin was born. I only found out about him after my mother died from another relative who was only a child at the time so does not remember many details.

I cannot register with the national adoption register because they need a date and place of birth which I don't have. I know he was born between 1954 and 1958 and am just assuming that he was adopted in that period.

I have obtained copy birth certificate s for each of the Martin's I thought may be him but none of the details match.

Hope you don't take this wrongly, but.........how reliable is your informant?

As he/she was 'only a child' at the time............and your mother is not able to refute the allegation.

Sandra, the name is so common that without at least some info about where the birth would have been it would be an impossible task, both for you and to help.

Going on the info from that search about where Dorothy was born, there were two Martins born there with the same surname and mother's surname, in 54 and 58. The problem is it's also possible he was registered in his father's surname, and 54-58 there were another 5 Martins in that location with mother's name Smith. There were also 3 Martyns with mother's name Smith born there during that period; one I had ruled out already (a member of this website) and the other two also seem to have married under their birth names. The surnames of the other 5 Martins are mostly too common to trace confidently.

Someone at this website has a Martin Smith in their tree born in that location in 56 and two people have a Martin Smith born in that location in 1957 but none of the Martins born there those years had mother Smith. Possibly they were born elsewhere in the same county. Have you contacted any other members here about possible Martins?

Probably the birth certificates you have obtained include those various Martins Smiths. The other thing you might do is get the certificates for the Martins whose mother was Smith, in case he was registered in his father's surname.

Did Dorothy not marry, and did she die several years ago in the same location as her birth? just because this would suggest she also had Martin in that location, unless she went away for his birth.

No sibling of your mother who is still living? I wonder because it looks like she had a twin who is on the electoral roll. Otherwise if she did have siblings she would be the youngest and likely the last surviving I guess.

If he is adopted, he will no longer have the name Smith. <3

I think everyone realizes that Eileen. :-D
He would not have married as Smith, and if he is deceased, he would not have died as Smith.
He might not even have the name Martin, depending on how old he was when adopted.
(adoptive parents might not change an older child's first given name)

However, he would likely have been born as Smith, which is what we are looking at.

People (and their families) who are looking for their birth families often put trees at this site showing themself (or their father or husband or child) under their birth name.
