Relatives of John Moore WW1serviceman

Flicky Report 12 Aug 2013 21:01

I am posting this on behalf of my cousin who is trying to unite ancestors with some personal communications from the past.
'I am trying to trace any family of a serviceman named John Moore who was killed in France in the latter stages of WW1. I don't know much about him other than he lived or had some connection with a cafe called ''Cave Oriental'' located in Hythe, Folkestone, Kent around this time. My mother has in her possession a series of postcards sent from the trenches by John to his girlfriend and she would like to return these cards to his family if possible as we know of no family on the girlfriends side''
Does anyone feels they might have a connection or able to suggest how we might find ancestors of John Moore?

Are the postcards addressed to Hythe. Do you think he had family connections at the cafe.

Hi Gwyn, I will ask my cousin about the postcodes and also pass on cafe details thanks! I think he died very young as the postcards were to his girlfriend back home. Very sad.

Today I had a chance to check electoral lists for 1918 / 1919 and there was no link to MOORE shown at the cafe ( 27 High Street, Hythe), but in previous ER books it seems a manager there was H.MOORE.
There was no H.MOORE listed in the general list of electors for Hythe, so perhaps he lived in a neighbouring town or village.
In Folkestone at this time there was H.MOORE listed at Cambridge Gardens.

Please can anyone see if they can make a connection between John MOORE , the soldier and H. MOORE the manager ( who may or may not be the one listed in nearby Folkestone ?

Thanks so much Gwyn. That is an interesting find. There is also the possibility that his girlfriend lived there which would be a Palmer or Bailey connection we think. If we can find a link to H.Moore that would be a great start in our search. Seems a big coincidence if there isn't a link.
:)

Choccy

Thank you for that.
I thought we might be on to something, but it looks unlikely that the soldier has any link to Harry the retired draper.

I feel there must be some link between the soldier and the cafe manager though, ...surely not just coincidence of surnames?

Thanks Choccy and Gwyn, I agree it seems too much of a coincidence!
